Hypergrid Adventurers Club meet #21+22: Exploring “The Grey Inn Between”

Today we took two tours of Vanish Seriath’s standalone grid “The Grey Inn Between.”

The Grey Inn was inspired by a story of “The Sandman” by Neil Gaiman, and it’s a magical place full of many beautiful creations.  Vanish gives his work away freely on The Grey Inn, and his blog has many helpful tutorials and downloadable free content for use in Opensim.

Read on for many photos and a full transcript of our discussions!

Update: Thirza Ember wrote a great blog post about her visit to jokaydiaGRID and her experience on today’s tour.  And Vanish also blogged about our tour. Thanks Thirza and Vanish!

For more information about the Hypergrid Adventurers Club and how you can join us, please see our homepage.  You can also follow our club’s tweets at #HGAC.

Pathfinder Lester

We begin on the region Pathlandia on jokaydiaGRID.

Pathfinder Lester:you all might notice how the water has changed color a bit, and at the center of it all is a new lotus flower
Pathfinder Lester: Eshi Otawara visited Pathlandia and made that flower. 🙂
Mimi Muircastle: nice blue:) and the flowers are pretty!

Aloe Cortex: its becoming a collective work of art, isn’t it?
Neo Cortex: seems this place is becoming a good example of what opensim should be
Pathfinder Lester: Aloe, slowly yes!
Pathfinder Lester: and speaking of the sharing nature of opensim, we’re going to visit “The Grey Inn Between” today, which is the creation of Vanish Firecaster of the blog “Tomorrow Glares Into Beyond: (http://tgib.co.uk/)
Eraldo Carlucci: cool
Pathfinder Lester: Vanish shares many things freely on his blog
Vanish Seriath: Good evening.
Mimi Muircastle: (love that blog name:)
Vanish Seriath: Sorry, I’m late.
Pathfinder Lester: OARs and objects and clothes and such
Pathfinder Lester: welcome Vanish! I was just talking about you!
Vanish Seriath: Aw, thanks.
Aloe Cortex: hello, vanish. nice to meet you
Pathfinder Lester: ok, i’ll kick things off….
Pathfinder Lester: Welcome to the Hypergrid Adventurers Club! Thank you all for joining us today.
Pathfinder Lester: The first 30 min of each meeting is spent on introductions and an open discussion.
Pathfinder Lester: And for the second 30 min of each meeting, we will make some Hypergrid jumps to visit and explore an interesting location on the Hypergrid.
Pathfinder Lester: To start, everyone please jump in and say a few words about yourself and your projects/interests in open chat. This is always a good opportunity for networking. 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: I post a full report and transcript of each meeting’s open chat on my blog, so this is also a chance for you to share information with everyone who reads the blog.
Pathfinder Lester: And if you say anything in open chat that you would NOT like to be posted on my blog, please just say so in chat and I will redact your comments.
Eraldo Carlucci: President Virtual Event Planners Int’l. Mission is to help companies choose VWs to help them to meet, collaborate and train. Just set up a hosted mega region near OSgrid territory…….can’t get there from here
Mimi Muircastle: Mimi/Charlotte hypergrid wanderer & newbie builder loving her 20K prim on Joykaydia…and hypergridding! no projects, just fun
Pathfinder Lester: I think everyone has been here before, except for our two new guests El and Vanish. Welcome! 😀
Vanish Seriath: Well, I’m V of tgib.co.uk. I’m here for the first time on this meeting, but I made a gift of hgac t-shirts which can be found on http://tgib.co.uk/2010/12/12/hgac-t-shirts-malefemale/
Pathfinder Lester: oh wow!
Vanish Seriath: I’ll pass them around.
Pathfinder Lester: thank you V!
Vanish Seriath: Sure.
Aloe Cortex: i am a sociologist with interests in social change and technology
Mimi Muircastle: this is the place to be for you, Aloe:) cutting edge of change!
Pathfinder Lester: V, I must say, your blog has really helped me get started with opensim. thank you so much for sharing so much information and content.
Eraldo Carlucci: Yes, I agree
Neo Cortex: I am a creator of corncircles…. errm bulder and explorer of many virtual worlds (Unix admin in rl, some exp in setting up grids and sims…)
Vanish Seriath: Well, we’re here to help, aren’t we?
Mel Blauvelt: I’m a philosopher, which kind of means I’m interested by default – lately interested in metrics, datavisualisation, games and interdisciplinary research
Aloe Cortex: yes, mimi. i am very excited about being here
Coyote Longfall: sorry I’m late
Pathfinder Lester: Hi Coyote! good to see you again
Pathfinder Lester: no worries, Coyote. we’re just doing the usual introductions
Coyote Longfall: 🙂
Neo Cortex: @El & V… could you please rebake?
Vanish Seriath: rebaking…
Mimi Muircastle: (it’s just their winter outfits 🙂
Vanish Seriath: (might be because my upload speed isn’t the fastest in the world)
Coyote Longfall: I’m Coyote Longfall, Research & Development Director for Four Bridges Project, a startup VW services company focusing on community based services for Nonprofits, Educational Institutions, and Business
El Sliven: I was a snowwoman!
Pathfinder Lester: oh, i have some news. I was told that the german grid of Metropolis is now upgrading to Opensim 0.7. which unfortunately means we will no longer be able to hypergrid jump to them. not until jokaydiagrid and RG also upgrades.
Neo Cortex: What opensim are you running at tgib:9000? An old Diva12751?
Da5id Zsigmond: I’m formerly mainly audio recording background now moving to mainly computer aps been in sl for 4 years and suffering from premature balding. Can’t keep my hair on lol
Eraldo Carlucci: Well, now I can get there
Coyote Longfall: but does that mean that jumping from OSGrid will now be possible?
Mimi Muircastle: hurry, then, I love the german grid:)
Pathfinder Lester: i know ReactionGrid is planning to upgrade sometime in january/feb.
Aloe Cortex: i’m having the same problem, da5id, lol
Neo Cortex: nope, osgrid has its own problems
Pathfinder Lester: Coyote, I’m not sure. last I heard, folks couldn’t make any hypergrid jumps from OSgrid to any other grids.
Coyote Longfall: that’s what I heard too, anytime I’ve asked, just told that it’s ‘borked’
Eraldo Carlucci: I think there using HG1.7 which is incompatible
Neo Cortex: thats right, i just tested that again with the latest opensim they provide
Jadyn Firehawk: it’s like habitat fragmentation, impedes migration of our species 🙂
Mel Blauvelt: that’s what I heard at the last OS office hour too Path
Neo Cortex: seems to be even worse now
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, things are fragmented right now on the hypergrid.
Ange Menges: We will do the same in francogrid, path, but we are waiting for the next release. Seems that OSgrid had some pb with 0.7
Mimi Muircastle: love that Jadyn:)
Pathfinder Lester: Ange, yes, I think it might be prudent to wait a bit before any major upgrades.
Neo Cortex: i would strongly suggest to wait until the opensim devs agree on a new stable 0.7.1
Coyote Longfall: that’s too bad, OSGrid is probably the richest environment in OpenSim
Vanish Seriath: I’m actually pretty curious on how the whole aurora thing will go.

“Aurora” is a new Opensim project that will let you easily run an Opensim grid on your desktop computer.  More details here.

Coyote Longfall: but that will change rapidly I think if you can’t get there by hypergrid jump
Pathfinder Lester: Ange, how are the plans going for the opera on Jan 6?
Neo Cortex: last thing i have heard about the newest hg 1.5i7 working is Ralf Haifisch has a working config on Wilder Westen
Pathfinder Lester: hmmm…i’m getting some chat lag
Neo Cortex: could it be this sims is slowly coming to a halt?
Pathfinder Lester: i know what’s up
Pathfinder Lester: it’s inventory transfers
Vanish Seriath: Sorry.
Pathfinder Lester: no worries
Pathfinder Lester: but i noticed this before
Neo Cortex: ahh… ty anyway V 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: if someone is hypergridded in here
Vanish Seriath: Yes, hg inventory transfers take a looong time.
Pathfinder Lester: and they start transferring inventory to other folks, it sometimes lags the sim.
florenze kerensky: ty vanish
Pathfinder Lester: but things recover. as you can all see now. 😀
Coyote Longfall: or several of us
Da5id Zsigmond: patience is a virtue sometimes. 🙂
Aloe Cortex: thank you, vanish : )
Pathfinder Lester: yes, thank you V!
Vanish Seriath: You’re very welcome.
Aloe Cortex: these are very pretty
Neo Cortex: well… maybe that opens the question once again: when and how can we try a newer hypergrid?
Pathfinder Lester: i think i should make an announcement in the future….
Coyote Longfall: not much different than a typical conversation in a busy sandbox in Second Life
Pathfinder Lester: if folks want to give things out, try rezzing a box so folks can take things.
Pathfinder Lester: i think that might help the inventory transfer issue across the hypergrid
Mimi Muircastle: good idea, Path –
Neo Cortex: I have just set up some new servers and i am thinking about offereing a hg1.5 base there
Pathfinder Lester: Neo, oh cool!
Neo Cortex: but since the whole hgac is based on reactiongrid i would rather help setting a server up on that grid…
Pathfinder Lester: that would be cool too, Neo.
Neo Cortex: Would sound as if i would want to attract ppl from other grids
Pathfinder Lester: ReactionGrid focuses more on stability, which is why we have not upgraded from 0.69 yet
Coyote Longfall: I’m still trying to work bugs out of my system to get Opensim to run standalone on my iMac… I keep getting errors. I would love to put up a standalone region on the hypergrid, even if only intermittently
Neo Cortex: I tried to get in touch with you and Chris about that… but you are a busy man 😉
Pathfinder Lester: Neo, sorry bout that. last week was exceptionally busy for us, since we were recovering from our conference the week before.
Neo Cortex: i noticed 🙂
Vonni Cisse is Offline
Pathfinder Lester: but this coming week I’ll be more accessible if you’d like to hit me up on skype or google chat to talk about it.
Neo Cortex: i just think it would be better to talk about future plans before setting up something that wont last long
Pathfinder Lester: if folks are interested in some of the presentations from ReactionGrid’s “IndieMetaverse” event, we have many of the sessions recorded in the video library at http://www.livestream.com/reactiongrid
Vanish Seriath: When is/was that event?
Mimi Muircastle: ty I missed it so this will be fun to watch
Ange Menges: Nice ! A missed some of them 😦
Neo Cortex: talking about google chat: whenever Aloe and i are doing hg jumps we stay connected on google chat as wel, so in case of a crash we still have some means of communication
Vanish Seriath: Wouldn’t it be useful to have an #hgac irc channel?
Vanish Seriath: <—– already made one
Coyote Longfall: that would be cool
Coyote Longfall: really
Pathfinder Lester: V, that would be cool. how can we access it?
Neo Cortex: maybe some kind of common chat (irc, etc…) would be nice
Coyote Longfall: on freenode?
Vanish Seriath: You need to get on a freenode irc server.
Vanish Seriath: Yes.
Vanish Seriath: And just access #hgac
Mimi Muircastle: for those of us somewhat in the dark, what is a freenode server?
Neo Cortex: one way to enter that is via the osgrid’s chat ^^
Mimi Muircastle: *irc
Vanish Seriath: freenode is an irc service.
Coyote Longfall: freenode is an IRC service – open chat
Vanish Seriath: It’s the most popular, afaik.
Neo Cortex: then /join #hgac on the status tab
Mimi Muircastle: access process, please:)
Vanish Seriath: I’ve got a small applet on tgib for those who don’t have an irc client.
Coyote Longfall: in the Phoenix viewer – there’s actually an IRC channel with group chat
Coyote Longfall: I use Chatzilla usually though
Aloe Cortex: nods at mimi “lost me too”
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll write up a notecard explaining how folks can access IRC
Pathfinder Lester: and I’ll write a blog post about it too

Here’s the blog post I wrote on how to access our IRC channel.

Mimi Muircastle: so does imprudence have the same IRC channel
Vanish Seriath: http://tgib.co.uk/2010/07/20/tgib-irc-channel/ (just change the channel from #tgib to #hgac)
Eraldo Carlucci: Looking for my Greek to English translator
Pathfinder Lester: thank you for setting up that channel V. that’s great
Coyote Longfall: I was into it about 10 years ago, just got back recenlty because OSGrid folks use it so much
Neo Cortex: it works ^^
Mimi Muircastle: ty path for helping us out!
Mimi Muircastle: of the dark:)
Da5id Zsigmond: if we had an HGAC group – would group chat work across different grids?
Vanish Seriath: Normal chat hardly works across grids.
Vanish Seriath: So group chat definitely not.
Pathfinder Lester: Da5id, group chat doesn’t currently work across different grids, as far as i know.
Da5id Zsigmond: But if we were all in the same grid it would ??
Pathfinder Lester: ReactionGrid has set up groups on the RG public grid, and will be soon rolling groups out on all the hosted grids (including jokaydiagrid)
Mimi Muircastle: but then we wouldn’t be hypernauts:)
Vanish Seriath: Depends on how well the group module is maintained by the grid.
Da5id Zsigmond: hypernuts.
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll set up a group here on jokaydiagrid for the HGAC once that happens.
Neo Cortex: afaik this is one of the projects in development right now
Vanish Seriath: Last time I checked, group chat was borky, to say the least.
Vanish Seriath: Not that it’s any better on SL.
Pathfinder Lester: V, have you tried ReactionGrid’s group implementation yet?
Neo Cortex: lol… hypernuts! i love that
Vanish Seriath: No, not yet.
Pathfinder Lester: I actually set up a group on ReactionGrid’s public grid for my office hours.
Pathfinder Lester: called “Pathfinder’s Office Hours” (i know, not very creative. lol)
Coyote Longfall: ReactionGrid has groups now? very cool
Pathfinder Lester: Coyote, yes!
Aloe Cortex: but descriptive, lol
Pathfinder Lester: http://www.hypergridbusiness.com/2010/12/reactiongrid-adds-groups-plans-upgrade/
Pathfinder Lester: we’re going to release the code as open source, too
Coyote Longfall: makes a note to make 3 groups in ReactionGrid, just to start with
Pathfinder Lester: Coyote, feel free! we need folks doing stuff like that so we can make sure things work well.
Coyote Longfall: good 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: ok, i’m going to pass out today’s notecard with our itinerary

— Contents of Notecard —
Before doing any Hypergrid jumps, be sure you have set your Home location and have relogged since you set it.  If you don’t, Hypergrid jumps will not work.  This appears to be a bug.

Many people find the Imprudence viewer to be very good for using with both SL and other grids.  You can find it here: http://imprudenceviewer.org/

*** How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.

*** Our Starting Location ***
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.233.81:9001:pathlandia
Region Name: “Pathlandia”
Grid Location: jokaydiaGRID (Lower)
************************

Hypergrid Jump #1
Hypergrid Address: hypergrid.reactiongrid.com:9009
Region Name: “HG Gateway 1”
Grid Location: ReactionGrid (Middle)
Grid Website: http://reactiongrid.com

We’ll be making this jump using one of the instant Hypergates on Pathlandia.  It’s the stone archway next to the Tardis..   Just walk up to the archway and walk through it.  You will automatically make a Hypergrid jump to “HG Gateway 1.”

For more information on how these instant Hypergates work, see:
https://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2010/10/29/the-metaphor-of-portals/

“HG Gateway 1” is a handy jump point in the “middle” of the Hypergrid.

Hypergrid Jump #2
Hypergrid Address: 88.191.79.199:9001:Eiffel
Region Name: “Eiffel”
Grid Location: FrancoGrid (Upper)
Grid Website: http://francogrid.org

We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”)

This location features an accurately scaled reconstruction of the Eiffel Tower based on real life architectural plans, as well recreations of other classic French buildings.

Hypergrid Jump #3
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.223.16:9023:TIGB
Region Name: “TGIB”
Grid Location: TGIB (Upper)
Grid Website: http://tgib.co.uk/2010/08/07/the-grey-inn-between/

We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”)

“The Grey Inn Between” is a rocky island region, home to a lighthouse, a hypergate portal and a medieval home.

This grid and region is owned and created by Vanish Firecaster of the blog “Tomorrow Glares Into Beyond: (http://tgib.co.uk/)

***
jokaydiaGRID has a Newbie Dome for folks to pick up freebies that can help them get started.  If you find any good freebies in your Hypergrid travels that you’d like to share, you can put them in the Newbie Dome.   There’s currently a lack of many good outfits and items for male avatars, so it would be great if we could find more items like that to share.
— End of Notecard —

Pathfinder Lester: we’re going to visit V’s home “The Grey Inn Between”
Vanish Seriath: Heh.
Pathfinder Lester: and since it is very far away on the hypergrid, we’re going to have to make a couple hops 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: but i tested this earlier, and the route works 🙂
Mimi Muircastle: btw I like having the info on your blog ahead of time, path
Pathfinder Lester: thanks Mimi
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, i’ve started doing that
Vanish Seriath: note that you can use tgib.zapto.org:9023 for tgib
Pathfinder Lester: posting the itinerary ahead of time on the Google calendar, then tweeting it
Mimi Muircastle: all of the above!
Pathfinder Lester: V, oh cool. ty. i used the hypergrid address i found on Hyperica
Pathfinder Lester: so let’s start our journey!
Pathfinder Lester: 😀
Pathfinder Lester: first jump is a blamgate. this one here 🙂
Mimi Muircastle: so we use the one in the notecard ??? or yours, V
Pathfinder Lester: jump to HG Gateway 1 on ReactionGrid
Vanish Seriath: Both will work, Mimi
Pathfinder Lester: just walk thru one at a time
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll wait for everyone to make it
Pathfinder Lester: and if it doesn’t work at first, just step back and try again ina few sec
Pathfinder Lester: there we go
Pathfinder Lester: poof
Pathfinder Lester: i love those sparkly effects 🙂
Neo Cortex: hehe

Our group walks through an Instant Hypergate (aka a “blamgate) on the region Pathlandia on jokaydiaGRID.

And we arrive on the region HG Gateway 1 on ReactionGrid.

Pathfinder Lester: woot!
Pathfinder Lester: so far so good!
Pathfinder Lester: ok, a manual jump from here to FrancoGrid
Pathfinder Lester: *** How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.
Pathfinder Lester: and the address is: 88.191.79.199:9001:Eiffel
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll wait for everyone to make it

We all make a Manual Hypergrid Jump and arrive on the region Eiffel on FrancoGrid.

Pathfinder Lester: nous arrivons!
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Vanish Seriath: Wow, that’s a really neat build.
Ange Menges: Strange, seems that I know this place !
Pathfinder Lester: V, it’s it nice!
Pathfinder Lester: they are going to put up xmas lights
Pathfinder Lester: for the holidays
Pathfinder Lester: on the whole tower 🙂
Neo Cortex: hehe… maybe you might have started from here, Ange?
Vanish Seriath: Wow.
Ange Menges: lol
Pathfinder Lester: so be sure to come back around the holidays
Pathfinder Lester: ok, just 1 last jump now
Aloe Cortex: cool that we becoming familar with various places in different grids : )
Pathfinder Lester: 66.240.223.16:9023:TIGB
Coyote Longfall: yes it is
Pathfinder Lester: Aloe, yes, i love that too
Mimi Muircastle: I love it too! sometimes I wander on my own!
Mimi Muircastle: so, hoping for compatible versions across the grid !
Ange Menges: Path as we are on francogrid, search on the map for Winter
Pathfinder Lester: Ange, oh cool. i have not visited there yet.
Pathfinder Lester: i will check it out today 🙂
Ange Menges: I will give you the hyperlink before the december 19
Pathfinder Lester: merci mon ami!
Mimi Muircastle: found it!
Ange Menges: But Nani closed it at the moment
Ange Menges: No cheat
Mimi Muircastle: ok
Ange Menges: lol
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: Nani is very talented. Can’t wait to see what she has created for the holidays. 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: ok, last jump from here is another manual on
Pathfinder Lester: one
Ange Menges: I hope you will like it
Pathfinder Lester: I’m sure it will be beautiful, Ange. her work with Pandora was amazing.

Here’s a blog post of a previous tour with amazing pictures of Nani’s region Pandora on FrancoGrid.

Mimi Muircastle: so we are off to the Inn
Pathfinder Lester: yess, see you at the Inn!

We all make a Manual Hypergrid Jump and arrive on the region TGIB on the standalone grid TGIB.

Pathfinder Lester: we made it! :D:D
Vanish Seriath: \o/
Pathfinder Lester: i love all the sounds here
Vanish Seriath: Aw, that’s the waves.
Pathfinder Lester: V, would you like to show us around? please lead on. this place is your vision. 🙂
Vanish Seriath: Okay.
Vanish Seriath: I made this inspired by a story of ‘the Sandman’ (1980’s graphic novel by Neil Gaiman).
Neo Cortex: who is Grace? ^^
Vanish Seriath: This here is the central hypergate. It runs on the hypergate scripts, I just made the sundial.
Vanish Seriath: Everything on this sim is copyable, so feel free to grab what you like.
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Aloe Cortex: (glad you made it, mimi)
Mimi Muircastle: me too can’t be lost on the hypergrid 🙂
Vanish Seriath: The lighthouse over there is the most recent addition.

Pathfinder Lester: i love the Statue
Pathfinder Lester: and all the trees…:)

Vanish.Seriath: I’m planning on setting up some vendors inside with things I made, so visitors can just take them without uploading them from the website.
Vanish Seriath: There’s some slowdance poseballs on the other end, for a start.
Vanish Seriath: I figured there was too little dancing on opensim, so I had to make these.
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Aloe Cortex: a very good idea, V : )
Neo Cortex: some think Blender is a program… but i am sure it is an operating system 😉
Vanish Seriath: Blender is from the devil.
Ange Menges: lol Neo
Neo Cortex: made for masochists ^^
Coyote Longfall: that’s why I use sculptypaint
Neo Cortex: but it is powerful as hell
Coyote Longfall: can’t do as much but — easier
Vanish Seriath: Okay, on the other end of the island is the inn. Let’s go there.

Neo Cortex: i made a simple animation and some sculpties with Blender… but there is sooooo much to discover
Vanish Seriath: Their hardware is really neat.
Eraldo Carlucci: I just set up one with Snoopie
Mimi Muircastle: how do you make your textures, V
Neo Cortex: i am just trying some small vps’es
Vanish Seriath: The textures are done with filterforge.
Mimi Muircastle: ty
Vanish Seriath: It’s an incredible application.
Ange Menges: Very nice, V, I like that lot !
Aloe Cortex: this is beautiful, V
Aloe Cortex: what a wonderful place!
Vanish Seriath: Aw, thanks.
Pathfinder Lester: i love the whole idea of an “Inn” on the hypergrid too
Pathfinder Lester: a place for travelers to gather.
Coyote Longfall: yeah
Aloe Cortex: yes, i do too
Vanish Seriath: Yes, I wanted it to be some kind of meeting place.
Aloe Cortex: with dancing!
Coyote Longfall: this is a really good build
Vanish Seriath: Aw, thanks.
Coyote Longfall: and it’s perfect
Vanish Seriath: You can get the furniture and everything from tgib.co.uk as downloads.
Vanish Seriath: The inn, too. florenze kerensky: warm and cosy
Neo Cortex: like “The Inn at the end of the metaverse…”
Mimi Muircastle: it is a great build:)
Vanish Seriath: I just used different textures for this one to make it unique.
Aloe Cortex: lol, neo…yes!
Mimi Muircastle: but is there an end to the metaverse?? 🙂
Neo Cortex: yep
Vanish Seriath: Well, I guess there are several.
Aloe Cortex: the rooms are very well appointed too : )
Neo Cortex: starts at 0,0
Neo Cortex: and there is a certain coordinate where it ends… for now
Pathfinder Lester: V, would you be interested in placing a small kiosk sign with info about our HGAC here? for people exploring the hypergrid who discover this place?
Vanish Seriath: Sure, I’d love that.
Vanish Seriath: Do you have one with you?
Mimi Muircastle: great idea, Path!
Pathfinder Lester: i made one out of stone, so I think it might fit in with the look of your place hereVanish Seriath: Thanks!
Pathfinder Lester: no, thank you!
Pathfinder Lester: 🙂

Ange Menges: Next time will bring some glasses of belgian beer 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Vanish Seriath: heh.
Pathfinder Lester: nice
Coyote Longfall: tea or coffee for me thanks 🙂
Mimi Muircastle: chai latte plz
Pathfinder Lester: V, all of your creations have a strong similar style. I’ve downloaded many of the items you give away freely on your blog.
Ange Menges: must have that somewhere also coyote 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: i love your trains
Pathfinder Lester: very beautiful
Vanish Seriath: Aw, thanks.
Vanish Seriath: Well, there are certain styles I love.
Vanish Seriath: Art deco is one of them.
El Sliven: yes…they are beautiful!
Pathfinder Lester: and your tutorials on how to import things are really helpful.
Vanish Seriath: So can’t blame me for sticking to them.
Pathfinder Lester: i often tell people to read them when they’re trying to learn how to import things into opensim
Vanish Seriath: Aw, great.
Vanish Seriath: Well, I know a lot of people are clueless on how all of that works.
Vanish Seriath: So I figured, if I gave out my creations, I might as well explain how to use them.
Neo Cortex: i have read a lot on TGIB… i love it!
Vanish Seriath: Aw, thanks.
Vanish Seriath: Heh, I didn’t think anyone would actually READ our stuff.
Eraldo Carlucci: I’ve read it too
Neo Cortex: errmmm… sorry ^^
Coyote Longfall: just favorited your blog Vanish
Pathfinder Lester: V, well, your writings and your work really exemplify the best parts of opensim.
El Sliven: oh my!
Pathfinder Lester: being creative
Pathfinder Lester: sharing things
Pathfinder Lester: explaining things
Vanish Seriath: Awww. Thanks a lot.
Pathfinder Lester: so I’m a huge fan of all you have done and are doing.
Aloe Cortex: i’ve read it too and can follow most of it : )
Pathfinder Lester: plus, you can build really well! that’s something I can only appreciate in others, being very build-challenged myself. 😛
Vanish Seriath: Heh, I guess we need to be more careful with out naughty postings then.
Jadyn Firehawk: what’s the blog URL? i lost it when i crashed
Vanish Seriath: http://tgib.co.uk/
Jadyn Firehawk: ty 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: V, nah, you’ve got strong opinions, and i think you share them well.
Vanish Seriath: Mmmh, you could say that.
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Coyote Longfall: Hey I have a hypergrid question – do some grids restrict uploading of textures, objects, etc., for guest avatars, or is that a standard thing… I’m afraid to try, don’t want to crash
Neo Cortex: thats what i love most about all this opensim stuff… to meet open minded, creative people ´like you all!
Pathfinder Lester: and I find it interesting how you often use the same initials, but they often mean different things.
Pathfinder Lester: TGIB
Pathfinder Lester: tomorrow glares into beyond
Pathfinder Lester: the grey inn between
Pathfinder Lester: to grace i’m bound
Neo Cortex: naughty poses? You made some more? 😉
Pathfinder Lester: 🙂
Vanish Seriath: If you upload something on hypergrid, it’ll upload to where your account is being hosted.
El Sliven: to Grace I AM Bound
Neo Cortex: who is Grace?
Vanish Seriath: (I made some more naughty poses. Gonna upload them soon.)
Eraldo Carlucci: V on my Hippo it shows TIGB on the header, is that a mistake?
Coyote Longfall: ok so textures, probably sounds can be accessed, but not linksets, that makes sense
Vanish Seriath: What header?
Pathfinder Lester: oh, the region name
Mimi Muircastle: yes, it must be that’s why I couldn’t tp
Eraldo Carlucci: Where it shows location
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, i see it as “TIGB” too
Vanish Seriath: That’s a typo.
Pathfinder Lester: ahhhhh
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Vanish Seriath: Gotta tell Snoopy about it.
Jadyn Firehawk: it’s a tpyo
Mimi Muircastle: i tried tg and it worked
Ange Menges: I have to go. V, thanks again for showing your work 🙂 See you, all
Pathfinder Lester: Vanish, you should update it on Hyperica too. I think the typo is there as well.
Vanish Seriath: Yes, I think they fetched it automatically.
Pathfinder Lester: a bientot Ange
Ange Menges: Sure will come again
Vanish Seriath: Bye Ange.
Mimi Muircastle: yes, thanks V, this is a great build!

Vonni Cisse: hi, Pathfinder
Pathfinder Lester: heya!
Vonni Cisse: hi, Cider Jack, I think we were just at your place………. Applewood
Cider Jack: ah yes, I saw a couple of green dots, but didn’t get a chance to investigate
Vonni Cisse: :o)
Pathfinder Lester: hey Vonni! good to see you again
Vonni Cisse: i brought Yanni in for the first time today
Cider Jack: nothing’s changed there, had a bit of a busy week
Yanni Fairlady: Hi Every one Vonnie said I should come see how this works
Vonni Cisse: hi, thanks!
Cider Jack: ah, Welcome Yanni 🙂
Jokay Wollongong: *Waves*.. hi all 😉
Vanish Seriath: Good evening all.
Pathfinder Lester: V an El, ty for coming again!
Vanish Seriath: It was fun last time.
Jokay Wollongong: oo nice tree pathfinder.. lolz
Arwenna Stardust: ah some converts!!
Pathfinder Lester: thanks jokay
Pathfinder Lester: I see a few new folks today. great!
Arwenna Stardust: hope you have all got your HGAC tshirts!
Pathfinder Lester: I’ll kick things off with the usual introductory commentts
Delenn Daines: I am Judy Kelly, from Henry Ford Community College, Dearborn, MI
Jokay Wollongong: grid owner, prim basher, facilitator at jokaydiaGRID 🙂
Cider Jack: prim basher, I like that
Jokay Wollongong: hehe
Vonni Cisse: I am Vonni, I just enjoy poking around the edges of the metaverse :o)
Cider Jack: I’m part owner/builder of the Applewood sim here on Jokaydiagrid along with Arwenna Stardust. After spending over three great years in SL I’m glad to find an OS grid to call my new home. 🙂 I’m here because I enjoy building, and welcome inspiration from all sources…
Yanni Fairlady: lol
Arwenna Stardust: I’m an IT lecturer in New Zealand – and chair of VLENZ (a not for profit societ) http://vlenz.edumuve.ac.nz – involved in various projects http://vlenz.wikispaces.com – looking at vws in education generally – mainly for tertiary students but also secondary using OpenSim and WoW.
Vanish Seriath: Hi, I’m V of tgib.co.uk. This is my second hgac meeting, but I made some shirts as a gift.
El Sliven: I am V’s partner in crime and like at TGIB and like to do some blogging on our blogsite, but actually know very little about building. I am along for the fun!
Pathfinder Lester: Jokay is too modest. for those of you who don’t know, Jokay created and runs the grid we are now on, “jokaydiaGRID”
Vonni Cisse: awww, thank you, Vanish
Vanish Seriath: (trying to rezz the giftbox by the fireplace…)
Thirza Ember: I’m Thirza, I’m inVirginia in RL, I write a blog about second life and other places
Jokay Wollongong: awww thanks Pathfinder.. but i think we’re ALL creating it… everytime i login someone has created something new and cool 😉
Arwenna Stardust: nice wrods Jo 🙂
Arwenna Stardust: or words even!
Vanish Seriath: (small plywood box.)
Pathfinder Lester: for those of you who haven’t seen it, you should definitely check out V’s blog http://tgib.co.uk. it’s a great blog, with lots of content V has created that he gives away freely to folks usng opensim.
Cider Jack: Not just humble, but gracious as ever, Jo 😉
Pathfinder Lester: helpful tutorials too!
Vanish Seriath smiles.
Yanni Fairlady: I am just here to check it all out. I love the creativity of the virtual worlds. I live in NY state and I am a professional tarot reader and Numerologist
Pathfinder Lester: and for our tour later, we’ll be visiting V’s grid and his place “The Grey Inn Between”
Vanish Seriath: Aww.
Pathfinder Lester: Yanni, very interesting. have you ever done a tarot reading in a virtual world?
Yanni Fairlady: yes I have done a few
Pathfinder Lester: oh cool!
Cider Jack: grey inn between… sounds like nothin’gs black & white
Vonni Cisse: LOL
Vanish Seriath: Heh.
Vanish Seriath: Well, it’s a play of words.
Arwenna Stardust: of course 🙂
Cider Jack: sometimes those are better than plays of people
Pathfinder Lester: it’s a great name
Cider Jack: and always better than a play of politics
Pathfinder Lester: Cider is on a roll today! lol
Jokay Wollongong: lolz
Arwenna Stardust: its the coffee!
Cider Jack: call me butter & jam if you like
Pathfinder Lester: how’s Applewood going, Cider? I keep seeing lots of steam-type machinery being built. what are you up to over there?
Jokay Wollongong: hiya johnnie 😉
Johnnie Waugh: Hi Jokay
Johnnie Waugh: Pathfinder..
Arwenna Stardust: we’ve been a bit slack on Applewood for the last couple of weeks
Cider Jack: something steamy-and top secret – in fact it’s so scecret even I don’t know what it’s going to be!
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Arwenna Stardust: lol!
Pathfinder Lester: hi johnnie. good to see you again.
Jokay Wollongong: Arent they the best creations? 😉
Arwenna Stardust: busy time of year and my grandson showed us Wizard101 the other day!
Thirza Ember: I hope it’s soup. I like soup
Cider Jack: or sometimes the worst time-wasters lol
Cider Jack: steam soup… hmmm
Pathfinder Lester: what’s Wizard101 Arwenna?
Cider Jack: oh yikes, yes wasted too much time there this wekk lol
Arwenna Stardust: I have been palying Wizard101 – a really neat game Path
Cider Jack: it’s a kids MMORPG
Arwenna Stardust: my grandson is amost 6 and he loves it
Jokay Wollongong: It ROCKS… lolz
Vonni Cisse: mmmmm, more addictions
Cider Jack: but it’s alot of fun!
Jokay Wollongong: I love it too
Arwenna Stardust: Im almost 61 and I love it!!
Arwenna Stardust: lol!
Pathfinder Lester: oh great. first someone tells me about Minecraft, now another game addiction is presented to me….
Arwenna Stardust: oh Minecraft is fascinating too
Vanish Seriath: Heh, luckily I never tried minecraft.
Jokay Wollongong: hehe… *coughs*…. catalyst! lolz
Arwenna Stardust: lol!
Cider Jack: haha yes, minecraft!
Vonni Cisse: one of my daughters loves it but i totally do NOT get it
Arwenna Stardust: Im getting seriously interested in how we can use these games to work with students
Cider Jack: I think Minecraft is a bit like SL – you really need to play with it for awhile before you figure out what it’s good for
Arwenna Stardust: and engage ouselves too at the same time
Pathfinder Lester: Arwenna, that’s an area that really interests me. how gaming can be applied to education.
Jokay Wollongong: Agree Arwenna… Dean and Jude will be running a games-based discussion group here, in SL and in WoW over the coming months
Arwenna Stardust: and then there is waiting for Portal2!!!
Jokay Wollongong: we had a great meetup with the Centre for Edupunx on Sunday too..
Vonni Cisse: it just looked like SL with no people and bad graphics to me
Jokay Wollongong: Goblin Gatherings will continue for anyon who’s keen 😉
Arwenna Stardust: Yes I want to be in touch with Dean about WoWin Schools
Pathfinder Lester: i haven’t seen any opensim-based games so far. nothing complex, I mean. has anyone found any game-based opensim grids?
Jokay Wollongong: WowinSchools is Peggy..
Arwenna Stardust: we will be using it here in Nelson next year
Jokay Wollongong: Dean has a new guild tho.. and will be doing similar things 😉
Arwenna Stardust: ah yes and Lucas
Arwenna Stardust: but I thought Dean was my closest connection (ie in AUs
Yanni Fairlady: What are Goblin Gatherings?
Jokay Wollongong: Their new guild is called Heroes and Scholars..
Jokay Wollongong: and is on Sisters of Elune
Cider Jack: there is an RP OS grid I got invited to, can’t recall the name…
Arwenna Stardust: mmm yes – saw that! will have to investigate!
Jokay Wollongong: Details are here – http://secondclassroom.ning.com/forum/topics/warcraft-for-educators-game
Arwenna Stardust: oh no!! more game to get addicted too! 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: Cider, I’d love to learn more about that. if you remember the name, can you let me know?
Arwenna Stardust: hehe!
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. the Goblin Gatherings are meetups in WoW with a bunch of educators… aim of exploring/learning together.. and talking about how games design/strategies can be used in the content we create for students
Cider Jack: sure Path, need to figure out where I stashed the bookmark now lol
Jokay Wollongong: Sunday morning aus time / Saturday arvo US time
Pathfinder Lester: given the complex nature of figuring out how to get around to visit all the different grids via hypergrid, i wonder if a hypergrid scavenger game would be something fun to design.
Vonni Cisse: ooooooooo
Cider Jack: omg yes!
Vonni Cisse: sounds great
Yanni Fairlady: yes def
Thirza Ember: i would play
Arwenna Stardust: I hear that 1.5 is quite a lot easier to use – any news on when we might upgrade?
Vonni Cisse: 1.5?
Pathfinder Lester: you’d have to collect everything on a single avatar account. you’d have to use hypergrid. no cheating by logging in different grids directly with different accounts.
Arwenna Stardust: sounds cool Path!
Pathfinder Lester: Arwenna, well, I know that ReactionGrid is still weighing the upgrade options.
Pathfinder Lester: the most current release of Opensim has some issues.
Arwenna Stardust: nods
Vonni Cisse: is there a sandbox in Jokaydia grid?
Arwenna Stardust: just gets impatient sometimes 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: and for example, OSGrid is running the very latest version of opensim, and all hypergrid jumps out of OSGrid currently do not work.
Arwenna Stardust: Yes Vonni
Pathfinder Lester: so we’ll have to wait and see how things get sorted out
Arwenna Stardust: there are 4 sasndbox sims
Cider Jack: Void, Spirit, Vitality & Essence
Jokay Wollongong: Agrees with Pathfinder… we are waiting for more news on upgrades from RG.. but we will have groups very soon.. although I’m dying for HG 1.5 too – we dont wanna upgrade and get landlocked as has happened at osgrid..
Jokay Wollongong: thanks Cider 😉
Vonni Cisse: great, thanks!
Arwenna Stardust: 🙂
Vanish Seriath: I’m a big fan of interconnected standalones anyway.
Arwenna Stardust: agreed Jokay 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: oh, Johnnie, I had a question about something you mentioned at a previous HGAC meeting
Pathfinder Lester: i didn’t notice it until i was posting the chatlog
Arwenna Stardust: Yes Vanish 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: you said “Notice that VirtualExchange is working on OpenSim 7 grids, in association with Linden Labs so lots of version 7 sims are commercial.”
Johnnie Waugh: Path ..I spend most of my time in 1.5 and there are many miore grid opoen to one particularly the italian and german grids
Cider Jack: yes Vanish, that seems to me to be the only way to do it right!
Jenny Oliver is Online
Pathfinder Lester: what’s VirtualExchange, and how is Linden Lab involved with it?
Johnnie Waugh: 1.5 seems to be much more stable that 1.0 too with a lot of wonderful builds on OS V 7 sims
Johnnie Waugh: its the OS money system and its backed by linden
Pathfinder Lester: backed by Linden dollars?
Johnnie Waugh: https://www.virwox.com/?r=4c0b
Arwenna Stardust: clicks
Johnnie Waugh: you can use it to trade anywhere
Pathfinder Lester: ahh ok, gotcha.
Pathfinder Lester: thanks for the clarification
Johnnie Waugh: particularly on a lot of the European OS sims which are commercial
Pathfinder Lester: i haven’t really explored the currency options with opensim. i don’t know much about that aspect at all.
Arwenna Stardust: me neither
Johnnie Waugh: its interesting that Lindens appear to be involved in it…because they seem to want to control the money across the board
Arwenna Stardust: John – sounds like anoteher blog post for vlenz/slenz?
Johnnie Waugh: which to me means they want to allow hyperjaunting at some time
Arwenna Stardust: please!
Cider Jack: I’m enjoying the moneyless society we have now 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: interesting
Jokay Wollongong: Hrrrm.. it says at the bottom of that page that its not affiliated with LL
Vonni Cisse: I would enjoy finding a workshop or something on currency, hosting your own sim, hooking up to the OSgrid, etc
Arwenna Stardust: good idea Vonni!
Pathfinder Lester: Cider, well, I’m stocking up on apples as my currency here on Pathlandia. I have baskets of ’em from your region Applewood. 😉

Johnnie Waugh: yes it does but on the side it says it is with their organisation
Arwenna Stardust: lol!!
Jokay Wollongong: We have been quietly watching the OS currencies evolve…. but at this stage we dont have any plans for it at jokaydiaGRID
Cider Jack: I better make more and devalue them a bit eh 😉
Arwenna Stardust: its fine til they start fermenting Path
Arwenna Stardust: or fomenting perhaps!!
Vonni Cisse: lol
Johnnie Waugh: and then Cider will help you drink the resulting brew
Cider Jack: I woulnd’t mind if OS were to skip the whole economy-thing (money creates poverty after all) but I know that will never happen
Pathfinder Lester: that’s Cider’s side-business here. moonshine.
Yanni Fairlady: yumm
Arwenna Stardust: haha!!
Vanish Seriath: I guess it depends on the people using OS.
El Sliven giggles
Arwenna Stardust: you can taste it straight from the still!
Cider Jack: you’ve never seen the shine on my moon 😉
Vanish Seriath: It’s like the web, some sites are free, some are commercial.
Cider Jack: *cough* PG! I know…
Thirza Ember: is it steamy?
Pathfinder Lester: V, true. opensim does not have to mirror SL. it can be something very different.
Cider Jack: lol
Jokay Wollongong: Lolz… i heard nothing Cider.. lolz
Vanish Seriath: More than that, everyone can decide for themselves what it will be for them.
Johnnie Waugh: yes that is true Path…….
Cider Jack takes his hands off Jo’s ears – is that better?
Pathfinder Lester: very good point V.
Arwenna Stardust: yes – I really really hope we can make Opensim something more than just a repeat of RL
Jokay Wollongong: I think there are plenty of options to develop micropayment options without an inworld currency.. particularly once creator rights are more persistant when moving content from grid to grid
Johnnie Waugh: hmmm with Hyperjaunting I think there is an opportunity to go anywhere and do anything
Arwenna Stardust: look for alternative ways of supporting peoples work
Pathfinder Lester: Jokay, yes, that’s a very compelling idea to me. to just enable “real” money transactions if folks want an economy.
Arwenna Stardust: rather than takedown notices!
Cider Jack: ah yes, would love to see something like that in place
Arwenna Stardust: yes
Cider Jack: lol yes that too Arwenna!
Thirza Ember: what are the security implications of hyperjaunting? I mean for your computer at home
Arwenna Stardust: have you looked at flattr?
Cider Jack: flattr is good
Vonni Cisse: flattr??
Cider Jack: none that I’m aware of Thirza… just clear your cache afterwards
Pathfinder Lester: Thirza, well, the most recent versions of the hypergrid protocol are focusing on more security.
Jokay Wollongong: flattr is def interesting.. it makes me think of Amanda Palmer’s take on artists earning a living ala her statues experience and making her music available freely
Cider Jack: flattr is a micro-donation system to support blogs/online projects
Vanish Seriath: Thirza, in theory it will allow others to run software on your computer, so there’s never to say what might happen, but if you’re not running a standalone on your computer that’s open for the public, the implications are very minimal.
Arwenna Stardust: just looking for link
Johnnie Waugh: ahhhh in Osgrid partuicularly a lot of the grids are homebase…but a lot of private grids have hypergates too…. likely to get stranded though if one tries to get to one that goes down
Cider Jack: http://www.flattr.com
Vonni Cisse: hate to be dumb but why do you need to clear your cache?
Vanish Seriath: solve everything = clear cache.
Vonni Cisse: okay, thanks, V
Arwenna Stardust: would love to see people using flattr.com or something similar
Pathfinder Lester: the only potential security issue I’ve read about is the very remote possibility that a grid owner could possibly tweak things to be able to get into the inventory of someone visiting via hypergrid.
Arwenna Stardust: should be a way to do it in world
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. after ‘did you restart the console’ is probably the most oft given advice then it gets buggy.. lolz
Cider Jack: to clear cache: Edit > Preferences > Network tab > Clear Cache, and then reboot
Pathfinder Lester: but nobody’s seen this happen. ever. it’s just theory. and the latest version of Hypergrid closes that potential hole completely, from what I’ve heard.
Arwenna Stardust: sorry didn’t mean to keep interrupting the flow of conversation! just got carried away with the idea of micropayments
Cider Jack: er, just relog rather, don’t need to reboot lol
Johnnie Waugh: yes I think that is right Path
Pathfinder Lester: Arwenna, no worries. these threads weave in and out. 🙂
Arwenna Stardust: 🙂
Cider Jack: makes for a great tapestry
Arwenna Stardust: agrees
Pathfinder Lester: hi Jenny!
Arwenna Stardust: Hi Jenny!
Jokay Wollongong: hi jenny 😉
Jenny Oliver: Hi, Path! Hi All.
Johnnie Waugh: You may have commented before Path…but noticed yesterday that Mal Burns estyate seemed to have the only blue gates left in Jokay
Jenny Oliver: Technology is a little flaky this end 😦
Pathfinder Lester: Johnnie, ah, gotcha
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, those stargate hypergates were causing problems
Pathfinder Lester: that’s why i removed mine.
Johnnie Waugh: but there are not even any at the cores
Johnnie Waugh: anymore
Pathfinder Lester: for folks who might not have heard, we discovered that the stargate hypergates were doing something funky even when they weren’t being used. nothing malicious, just was confusing the hypergrid routing.
Johnnie Waugh: ok
Cider Jack: good to know
Johnnie Waugh: so what are you using instead
Vonni Cisse: ah
Pathfinder Lester: Johnnie, I’m just using my regular blamgates.
Pathfinder Lester: and manual hypergrid jumps.
Johnnie Waugh: ok
Cider Jack: blamgates ftw XD
Johnnie Waugh: from the map?
Pathfinder Lester: Johnnie, correct.
Jokay Wollongong: manual hypergrid jumps are the safest… blamgates have cool factor.. but they do seem to confuse the map sometimes too
Jenny Oliver: I never could get the Stargate type to work!
Pathfinder Lester: speaking of which, we should start our journey now!
Arwenna Stardust: me neither Jenny
Jokay Wollongong: nothing is perfect.. wear a crash helmet and take your persistance with you 😉
Pathfinder Lester: has anyone here never made a hypgergrid jump before?
Cider Jack: adventure, ho!
Jenny Oliver: Ah – glad you mentioned that, Jokay! I’d seen that
Thirza Ember: me
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll pass out today’s notecard now, too.
Johnnie Waugh: thanks

Before doing any Hypergrid jumps, be sure you have set your Home location and have relogged since you set it.  If you don’t, Hypergrid jumps will not work.  This appears to be a bug.

Many people find the Imprudence viewer to be very good for using with both SL and other grids.  You can find it here: http://imprudenceviewer.org/

*** How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.

*** Our Starting Location ***
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.233.81:9001:pathlandia
Region Name: “Pathlandia”
Grid Location: jokaydiaGRID (Lower)
************************

Hypergrid Jump #1
Hypergrid Address: hypergrid.reactiongrid.com:9009
Region Name: “HG Gateway 1”
Grid Location: ReactionGrid (Middle)
Grid Website: http://reactiongrid.com

We’ll be making this jump using one of the instant Hypergates on Pathlandia.  It’s the stone archway next to the Tardis..   Just walk up to the archway and walk through it.  You will automatically make a Hypergrid jump to “HG Gateway 1.”

For more information on how these instant Hypergates work, see:
https://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2010/10/29/the-metaphor-of-portals/

“HG Gateway 1” is a handy jump point in the “middle” of the Hypergrid.

Hypergrid Jump #2
Hypergrid Address: 88.191.79.199:9001:Eiffel
Region Name: “Eiffel”
Grid Location: FrancoGrid (Upper)
Grid Website: http://francogrid.org

We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”)

This location features an accurately scaled reconstruction of the Eiffel Tower based on real life architectural plans, as well recreations of other classic French buildings.

Hypergrid Jump #3
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.223.16:9023:TIGB
Region Name: “TGIB”
Grid Location: TGIB (Upper)
Grid Website: http://tgib.co.uk/2010/08/07/the-grey-inn-between/

We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”)

“The Grey Inn Between” is a rocky island region, home to a lighthouse, a hypergate portal and a medieval home.

This grid and region is owned and created by Vanish Firecaster of the blog “Tomorrow Glares Into Beyond: (http://tgib.co.uk/)

***
jokaydiaGRID has a Newbie Dome for folks to pick up freebies that can help them get started.  If you find any good freebies in your Hypergrid travels that you’d like to share, you can put them in the Newbie Dome.   There’s currently a lack of many good outfits and items for male avatars, so it would be great if we could find more items like that to share.
— End of Notecard —

Pathfinder Lester: ok
Pathfinder Lester: those of you who have not jumped before…
Pathfinder Lester: you should set your home location to right here. and then relog quick.
Pathfinder Lester: hypergrid jumps won’t work if you have not set your Home location first.
Pathfinder Lester: you only need to do that once
Pathfinder Lester: after you’ve set your Home location and have relogged since you first set it, hypergrid jumps will always work for you.
Pathfinder Lester: Yanni, have you set your Home location and relogged since you first set it?
Pathfinder Lester: oh, and if anyone does not have a notecard, just let me know.
Yanni Fairlady: yes I have relogged since I set my home location
Pathfinder Lester: Yanni, great!
Pathfinder Lester: then we’re off!
Cider Jack: wohoo!
Pathfinder Lester: first jump is walking thru this blamgate
Jokay Wollongong: I’ll hang out here till the last of you make it out.. yell if you need helps 😉
Pathfinder Lester: just line up and walk thru one at a time
Jokay Wollongong: sooo many sparkles.. lolz
Arwenna Stardust: lolz!
Pathfinder Lester: if it doesn’t work at first, just step back, wait a few sec and try again
Arwenna Stardust: and magic sounds!
Thirza Ember: wow this is exciting
Pathfinder Lester: maybe it should be called a “sparklygate”
Jokay Wollongong: hehe… sparklygate.. lolz
Arwenna Stardust: sparklegate?
Thirza Ember: just walk through huh
Thirza Ember: i’m afraid
Pathfinder Lester: kind of funny
Cider Jack: sounds like a political scandal
Pathfinder Lester: Thirza, it’s totally painless.
Pathfinder Lester: i promise
Jokay Wollongong: it just leaves glitter in your hair.. lolz
Cider Jack: it’s fun, much like jumping out of an airplane!

Our group walks through an Instant Hypergate on the region Pathlandia on jokaydiaGRID.

And we arrive on the region HG Gateway 1 on ReactionGrid.

Pathfinder Lester: there we go
Pathfinder Lester: we have jumped to a new grid. ReactionGrid
Thirza Ember: that was neat
Vonni Cisse: yaaaaaaaaaa
Pathfinder Lester: those of you who are new to this, you are now officially Hypernauts.
Pathfinder Lester: now
Pathfinder Lester: we’re going to make a manual hypergrid jump
Pathfinder Lester: *** How to make Manual Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.
Yanni Fairlady: cool
Pathfinder Lester: and the address is
Pathfinder Lester: 88.191.79.199:9001:Eiffel

We all make a Manual Hypergrid Jump and arrive on the region Eiffel on FrancoGrid.

Jokay Wollongong: yaaay… everyone made it… oh and look.. botgirl is here… lolz
Thirza Ember: god how lovely
Vonni Cisse: what grid is this?
Pathfinder Lester: we are now on FrancoGrid!
Pathfinder Lester: and remember
Vonni Cisse: thanks :o)
Pathfinder Lester: you’ve got the notecard with all the details of our trip today
Pathfinder Lester: so you can come back to any of these places now. you have the directions. 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: ok, our last jump to our final destination awaits us!
Jokay Wollongong: agree… the hypergrid notecards are super handy for getting out and about quickly
Pathfinder Lester: we make another manual jump like before.
Pathfinder Lester: and the location is
Pathfinder Lester: 66.240.223.16:9023:TIGB
Pathfinder Lester: 1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.
Pathfinder Lester: hypergrid address is 66.240.223.16:9023:TIGB
Jokay Wollongong: Poor Botgirl.. i dont think she’s allowed out… lolz
Pathfinder Lester: those bots have ben here as long as i can remember
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: i think someone forgot them! 😦
Jokay Wollongong: hehe… they are at a few other grids too.. she’s a virus.. lolz

Pathfinder Lester: oh hi Jenny
Jokay Wollongong: you made it jenny! 😉
Pathfinder Lester: 🙂
Jenny Oliver: Crashed and returned!
Pathfinder Lester: welcome back
Jenny Oliver: ty
Pathfinder Lester: ok, i’m going to head over now
Jokay Wollongong: well done
Pathfinder Lester: see you there!

We all make a Manual Hypergrid Jump and arrive on the region TGIB on the standalone grid TGIB.

Vonni Cisse: wow, atmosphere by the truckload
Pathfinder Lester: the ambient sounds add so much
Pathfinder Lester: Vonni, yeah, you can’t currently use landmarks for hypergrid locations
Vonni Cisse: too bad
Pathfinder Lester: although your landmarks will work *within* the grid you make them
Vonni Cisse: where is this, Vanish? attached to another grid?
Pathfinder Lester: so for example, if you visit the other regions on FrancoGrid, you can save landmarks to them
Vanish Seriath: I usually have a notecard with me that stores interesting adresses.
Vanish Seriath: And I keep some on tgib as weblinks.
Pathfinder Lester: but you should make a folder for each grid and put your grid-specific landmarks in them to help you organize them.
Pathfinder Lester: V, yeah, i keep lots of notecard notes too.
Jenny Oliver: I usually run with a simple text editor open, to make notes or copy-and-paste
Vanish Seriath: I found the most useful way is to use secondlife://… style landmarks.
Pathfinder Lester: if you play around with windlight settings, this place looks even more amazing

Jenny Oliver: Interesting – I can see you all
Vanish Seriath: Yes, I want to use some lightshare settings when I ever upgrade.
Pathfinder Lester: V, do you have specific windlight settings you like for your region?
Pathfinder Lester: oooh cool
Vonni Cisse: what grid are we on now?
Vanish Seriath: There’s one that’s called ‘euphoria day of the end’
Vanish Seriath: That looks amazing here.
Thirza Ember: what is TIGB
Pathfinder Lester: Vonni, we are on V’s own grid
Vanish Seriath: TIGB is a typo.
Pathfinder Lester: “TGIB grid”
Vanish Seriath: It should be TGIB.
Thirza Ember: vanish is this your place?
Pathfinder Lester: TGIB grid is in the far Upper part of the Hypergrid.
Vonni Cisse: so, on V’s computer?
Thirza Ember: it’s lovely
Vanish Seriath: And it’s not really a grid, just a hypergridded standalone.
Jenny Oliver: Can you see me? My chat is registering
Vanish Seriath: I can see you.
Vonni Cisse: i see you, Jenny
Pathfinder Lester: that’s why we had to make 2 jumps to get here. we came from jokaydiaGRID, which is in the Lower hypergrid
Pathfinder Lester: and you can’t make jumps further than 4096 regions away.
Pathfinder Lester: so we had to hop 😉
Vonni Cisse: i am totally map challenged
Pathfinder Lester: Vonni, don’t worry. it’s confusing at first.
Vonni Cisse: how do you know how far something is?
Jenny Oliver: Please don’t wait for me – I can follow the excellent notecard very easily
Pathfinder Lester: with practice it gets better
Pathfinder Lester: Jenny, this is our final destination. you made it! 😀
Arwenna Stardust: sorry I crashed
Johnnie Waugh: Path I use Vanish’s jumpgate in NZVWG and it seems to be relaible and work well
Vanish Seriath: Usually the coordinates are listed on hg directories.
Pathfinder Lester: Johnnie, oh cool.
Thirza Ember: this gate here is beautiful also
Jenny Oliver: You’re hardly alone in that, Arwenna
Vanish Seriath: hyperica.com is pretty reliable.
Pathfinder Lester: yes i love the sundial

Arwenna Stardust: 🙂
Vanish Seriath: Btw, everything here is copyable.
Vanish Seriath: So if you like something, feel free to take a copy.
Johnnie Waugh: yes most things are here
Jenny Oliver: thanks!
Vonni Cisse: that sundial is really impressive
Arwenna Stardust: nice Vanish! thank you!
Johnnie Waugh: the tower is but you dont get the reflector
Vanish Seriath: Aw, I forgot the reflector?
Vonni Cisse: wow, that is incredibly generous, thank you
Arwenna Stardust: now if we were using flattr I could say thank you with a micropayment 🙂
Vanish Seriath: Heh, now it is, Johnny.
Johnnie Waugh: Thanks Vanish……
Vanish Seriath: Well, that’s what tgib is about.
Johnnie Waugh: ah great…its one of the best towers around

Vanish Seriath: I share all my creations for free.
Pathfinder Lester: very kind of you, V. you are helping the opensim community a lot by doing what you do.
Johnnie Waugh: yes love your train too
Vanish Seriath: I just thought it’s a shame that there’s so little things out there people can use for their own opensim.
Vonni Cisse: that is one reason I wanted to import skin and hair, having trouble with the hair, lol
Pathfinder Lester: and thank you again for putting up a HGAC sign. 🙂

Johnnie Waugh: and you are right……….. Klarabelle karamelle has the same view as you…think her base is the german grid…but in HG 1.0 she has Eppilonia
Vanish Seriath: You’re most welcome, Path.
Vanish Seriath: I need to visit metropolis more often.
Vanish Seriath: They’ve got a lot of nice things there.
Johnnie Waugh: yes they have
Pathfinder Lester: we took a tour there a while ago
Pathfinder Lester: fun grid to explore
Pathfinder Lester: ok, i’ve got to head out
Pathfinder Lester: thank you again for hosting us today V
Cider Jack: aw shoot!
Pathfinder Lester: and i hope you all had fun
Cider Jack: well thanks for taking us out and about 🙂
Johnnie Waugh: thank you path…btw feel that hyperjaunting brings back the excitement of the old SL
Cider Jack: absolutely!
Pathfinder Lester: Johnnie, i feel that too 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: have a good evening everyone. take care, and see you soon.
Thirza Ember: thanks for bringing us here Path

And so ends another day of exploring with the Hypergrid Adventurers Club.

  1. Pathfinder Lester: for folks who might not have heard, we discovered that the stargate hypergates were doing something funky even when they weren’t being used. nothing malicious, just was confusing the hypergrid routing.

    Pathfinder,

Please stop spreading FUD on our hypergates.

Your “hypergrid routing” issues are a result of the IP & PORT dispersion that your grid admins have chosen to implement on the grids that they manage. These issues are inherent in the very outdated HG 1.0 revisions of OpenSim.

The whole notion that a hypergate script written in LSL script could somehow effect TCP/IP routing is laughable at best, and an insult to the intelligence of the OpenSim Devs that implemented the LSL scripting language for OpenSim at worst.

Our hypergates and hypergate scripts have been, by far, the most widely used gates and scripts on the HyperGrid since the HyperGrid was invented. They have been in use for almost 2 years now and no one has ever complained about them causing “hypergrid routing” issues.

It is obvious that you are promoting your own “blamgates” and scripts, but is spreading FUD on our hypergates really the way to do it?

    • I’m not promoting anything of my own and have no ulterior motives. The “blamgates” that I set up could be created by anyone, using open source code that I found on HypergridBusiness as I explained here. I was told by my coworker Chris Hart that your hypergates were causing hypergrid teleport problems, and that she could not identify exactly what was going on with them since the code in your gates is obfuscated. Chris recommended I remove them. Please contact Chris directly if you want more details.

I was simply told of a problem, and I wanted to pass on the information to help folks. That’s all. I’ve used your hypergates a lot and think they’re a great idea. Hopefully this can all be worked out.

    • Kidd, I like you; and I like the HyperGates. I believe it’s a wonderful idea that needs to spread further.

Still – or rather, because of that – I can’t for the love of Murphy understand what bugged you about Pathfinder’s report. I don’t see any FUD being spread; rather, I think it’s important to exchange experience about what works and how. And this is a subjective report; I think anyone understands it as such. Pathfinder having problems with it doesn’t mean we all have problems with it. I don’t experience any routing issues (whatever that is), but I have different problems with the HyperGate (some menu buttons not working). Should we all be quiet about the problems we encounter? I don’t think that would help anyone, not us, not you, not the HyperGates network, not hypergrid, not OpenSim as a whole.

I, for one, would love the HyperGates to be even better, but now I feel there is no use in even talking to you about these problems.

Please let’s just make a better hypergrid.

      • Hello V,

We have always encouraged feedback and constructive criticism. When this project first started, almost 2 years ago, we would have weekly meetings in-world to hear feedback and input from early HyperGridders. To this day, we still value and encourage feedback and constructive criticism.

In the beginning of November of this year, we received a message from the main grid admin at Reaction Grid saying that our Gates were causing problems on their grid, namely “redirecting regular teleports and breaking sim crossings”. Within hours of receiving this message, I personally went to Reaction Grid investigate the matter and to try to help resolve any issues that they were having.

There I met with one of the grid administrators for ~40 minutes in an attempt the resolve the issues. Our joint findings were that, while attempting to use the HyperGrid, some people had landed in the wrong regions for 2 reasons. One reason that people had landed in the wrong region was because they had typed in malformed or incorrect HG addresses/SLURLs. The other reason was the well known issues with HG 1.0: namely it’s handling of IP and PORT assignments and often ignoring the region name in the HG addresses/SLURLs.

None of these reasons had anything to do with our Gates.

So as you can see. I did everything that I could to help them with their issues: responded immediately to their report, personally went to work with them to resolve the issues, sent an email to the main grid admin with my findings along with the transcript of my meeting with the grid admin there. This is constructive.

The comments that Pathfinder made above i.e “doing something funky” & “confusing the hypergrid routing” are not in the least bit constructive and are not even based on fact. The only purpose that they serve is to cast fear, uncertanty, and doubt on our Gates.

We strongly believe that the 2 main forces that are holding back the widespread acceptance and adaptation of the HyperGrid are disinformation and lack of information. Most of what we do at the HyperGates is related to combating those two forces for the greater good and advancement of the HyperGrid and OpenSim as a whole.
