Today we took a Hypergrid jump tour from jokaydiaGRID to NewWorldGrid.
We visited a historical recreation of Mount Grace Priory in England.
Read on for a full transcript and photos of our excursion.
For more information about the Hypergrid Adventurers Club and how you can join us, please see our homepage. You can also follow our club’s tweets at #HGAC.
We had two tours this Sunday, so please read on for details and photos from both of them.

Mimetic Core
Talvin Muircastle
Pathfinder Lester
We begin on the region “Pathlandia” in jokaydiaGRID.
Pathfinder Lester: hi everyone 🙂
arielion dotcom: Do you know how to get our avatars from SL in here?
Pathfinder Lester: arielion, do you mean how to import your avatar body settings?
arielion dotcom: @Pathfinder Yes
Pathfinder Lester: hmm… i remember Ener Hax wrote a blog post about that
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll see if I can find it for you
Aloe Cortex: i’m delighted that i seem to have figured out the time difference and am here at the right time
florenze kerensky: there is a way to bring your entire avatar here from sl?
arielion dotcom: @FLo Don’t know but I’d like to try
Mimi Muircastle: To create my JK avie I copied my avatar # from SL and input them here in JK – comes close except for the hair 🙂
florenze kerensky: how bout skin?
florenze kerensky: i did same with shape but that’s bout it 🙂
Mimi Muircastle: you can only import skin if you created it yourself
arielion dotcom: I’m trying to figure out how to get wings and paste my own image on my face. :o)
florenze kerensky: neat timeline i came across http://www.dipity.com/xantherus/Virtual_Worlds
Pathfinder Lester: i can’t seem to find Ener Hax’s blog post about how to export avatar settings. i’ll find it later and post the link in this transcript when I blog about this meeting.
Here’s the link to Ener Hax’s post on how to export avatar shapes: http://iliveisl.com/save-yourself-exporting-your-shape-from-second-life/
Pathfinder Lester: Jokay, was it you who left out the fancy dresses yesterday for the opera?
Jokay Wollongong: oh no i think that was Arwenna 😉
Jokay Wollongong: jokaydians are so good.. hehe
Pathfinder Lester: I must remember to thank Arwenna. that was very thoughtful of her.
Jokay Wollongong: yeah she’s always so lovely
Jokay Wollongong: check out the fantastic sculpture she and cider have placed on scooter sim too..
Talvin Muircastle is trying to make a wearable wheelchair for those who want to make their avs look like their RL selves.
Sandy Adam: hey everyone.. in SL I’m Georgianna Blackburn
Pathfinder Lester: well, this is a good time to start the meeting. we always start by going around and introducing ourselves and what our projects and interests are.
Pathfinder Lester: so please all just type in open chat whatever you’d like to share about yourself.
Pathfinder Lester: i will be blogging a full transcript of this meeting, so this is your chance to share info about yourself and your interests/projects with a wider audience on the web.
Pathfinder Lester: and if you do NOT want what you type in open chat to be posted on my blog, please just say so and I will redact your chat comments.
Mimi Muircastle: mimi – just enjoying learning from all of you ubertechies and building, building, building on my huge island!
arielion dotcom: I’m just trying to find viable virtual worlds. Preferably behind a firewall
Aloe Cortex: I am a sociologist in the US with interests in social change & technology. Also in the social construction of reality which I’ve been working on in SL for a couple of years.
Mel Blauvelt: Philosopher, Science Circle board, interested in interdisciplinary research, computer graphics and, surprisingly, philosophy
Talvin Muircastle: I break everything I haven’t managed to fix yet, I own the Callahania region here, I make accessible products for people with Disabilities and the Educators of JokaydiaGrid, and right now I wish I could see myself as well as you say you can: I see the back of the chair, my sneakers, and my hair.
florenze kerensky: virtual vagabond since 2000. host a show and tell in SL for over four years now. clinical chemist in rl
Mimi Muircastle: love that —> virtual vagabond !
Aloe Cortex: yes, a great term
Sandy Adam: I am the Director of Marketing for Fashion Research Institute .. member of the ScienceSim Senate … Georgianna Blackburn in SL & Inworldz and Sandy in most others
Pathfinder Lester: i love it
Pathfinder Lester: that’s a great project, Sandy. great to have you visiting us!
Sandy Adam: thanks
arielion dotcom: Someone used he term “puppy free” the other day and that’s a perfect one I’ll never forget
Mimi Muircastle: it is a fascinating project, Sandy – nice to meet you here!
Mimetic Core: RL: Jason Shipley. Working on OpenSim projects and augmented reality here in Chicago.
Sandy Adam: yeah Chi town.. I’m just south of Milwaukee
Mimi Muircastle: I have often owed my soul to my vet:)
arielion dotcom: Did anyone else find it hard to think of a JG name after having last names assigned by SL? :o)
Pathfinder Lester: as usual, we spend the first 30 min of each of our club meetings having an open discussion. so if there’s anything you’d like to bring up or questions to ask, just jump in.
Pathfinder Lester: the 2nd 30 min of the meeting will be our live tour. I’ll pass out a notecard to everyone now with details on the trip we’re going to make today.
arielion dotcom: Can you teleport others where you are here? (Ie, if you lose me can you send me an invite teleport?)
Sandy Adam: I haven’t tried hypergrid hopping yet
Mel Blauvelt accepted your inventory offer.
Mimi Muircastle: welcome to becoming a *hypernaut* Sandy!
florenze kerensky accepted your inventory offer.
Sandy Adam: smiles
Aloe Cortex: you are in for a treat, sandy. great fun!
Angelle AARISS: Welcome aboard
Pathfinder Lester: it’s one thing to theoretically understand how it all works. it’s another thing to see it actually working.
Aloe Cortex: i wanted to ask about that “setting home” and reglogging…
arielion dotcom: My masculinity is slightly threatened by puple name tags and having to ask directions for hypergrid travel. :o)
Pathfinder Lester: Aloe, pls ask away.
Aloe Cortex: do you only need to do that once or everytime?
Pathfinder Lester: just once
Aloe Cortex: ok, thanks : )
Pathfinder Lester: the hypergrid protocol needs to know where your “home” is, or you won’t be able to jump.
Sandy Adam: was Home set for us when we orginally logged to Joykaydia grid?
Pathfinder Lester: and the best site to get a list and description of all the hypergrid enabled places is http://hyperica.com
arielion dotcom: Can we set home here?
Pathfinder Lester: Sandy, no, it is not set automatically.
Talvin Muircastle: Well, since it is open discussion: the burning question on my mind of late is this: what scripted (in-world) tools do Educators need most urgently?
Pathfinder Lester: you have to set it from the World menu in your viewer.
Pathfinder Lester: Talvin, i find that educators often ask for whiteboards to use to share slides
Pathfinder Lester: chatbots are also often asked for
Talvin Muircastle: Pathfinder: Well, OSSL gives some interesting tools for that. In fact, I have an alpha release ready for testing. 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: Talvin, that’s great!
Peter Miller: I have a simple displayboard too
Talvin Muircastle: Mind if I rez out a copyable box?
Pathfinder Lester: Talvin, please do!
Talvin Muircastle: There you go, the white box by the fire. It is an ALPHA release, please note. 🙂
Aloe Cortex: and what does it do, talvin?
Pathfinder Lester: i have autoreturn turned off here, so i’ll leave that box there for folks who want to pick one up later.
Talvin Muircastle: Aloe: it uses the OpenSimulator Scripting Language Dynamic Texture commands to create textures “on the fly” for the display. I set it up so you can make a notecard with text and certain commands using a Markup Language that I developed to go with it, and it will show the text (modified by the Markup Language commands) and show it as a slide. 🙂
Talvin Muircastle realizes that was horribly long and geeky.
Aloe Cortex: ah, thanks, talvin. that sounds very useful
Mimi Muircastle: but interesting and good to know, Talvin!
Talvin Muircastle: Whiteboard. Take some notecards, add some text, add a few special commands. Number your notecards 1 to whatever, drop them in, reset the script. Slide show!
Mimi Muircastle whispers: isn’t this geek-heaven:)
Talvin Muircastle: *Alpha*. No warranty guaranteed, implied, or faintly wished for.
florenze kerensky: pathfinder… i have a question i’ve been meaning to ask since my first visit here…. is that corn from THE cornfield?
Pathfinder Lester: florenze, lol
Pathfinder Lester: i don’t think so
Pathfinder Lester: i believe I found that cornfield somewhere on FrancoGrid
Talvin Muircastle: And Open Source
Pathfinder Lester: the cornfield is copyable, so feel free to take a copy and plant your own
Pathfinder Lester: but be warned. cows like to eat the corn.
Mimetic Core: all hg landing points should be corn feilds.
arielion dotcom: Seems fair since most of us eat cows
Talvin Muircastle: There is Food. And there is what Food Eats. Though sometimes I eat what food eats next to my food, as a garnish.
Sandy Adam: the notecard stays with us wherever we go?
Pathfinder Lester: Sandy, yes!
Jokay Wollongong: yeah sandy.. you take your inventory with you
Sandy Adam: cool
Pathfinder Lester: that’s the beauty of Hypergrid jumps
Pathfinder Lester: your inventory and avatar and identity stay with you wherever you go
Mimi Muircastle: instant carry-ons
arielion dotcom: And no bumping your head on the overhead compartment!
Pathfinder Lester: some grids don’t allow you to rez fruit from your inventory. because of customs issues with non-native bugs that could ravage the crops I think.
arielion dotcom: LOL
Mimetic Core: no rezzing any exotic fish species either
Aloe Cortex: i have found that you need to open boxes where you get them…not take them home
arielion dotcom: I qualify as a pest in several countries in RL and online so I sometimes get sprayed
Aloe Cortex: the boxes from freebie stores…sometimes they don’t open at home…only in original grid
Aloe Cortex: but once in inventory, they travel fine
Mimi Muircastle: might be interesting to know each of our *home* grids??
Pathfinder Lester: good idea, Mimi!
Pathfinder Lester: jokaydiaGRID is my primary home. my region here, Pathlandia.
Mimi Muircastle: mine is here thanks to Jokay!
Peter Miller: I don’t have one yet — mainly playing with OpenSim on USB atm
Mimi Muircastle: Mayflower and Orlando 🙂
Aloe Cortex: OSGrid and here too
arielion dotcom: Set it here I mean, not an official paid resident
arielion dotcom: <– Freeloader
Pathfinder Lester: i’m setting up a region on ReactionGrid so I can work on things there. I’ll be setting up Hypergrid jump gates there so folks can easily make their way to jokadyaGRID.
Mimetic Core: i have a private grid as home home and OSGrid is my second home.
Jokay Wollongong: Rob has some nice tents on her beach at Western Institute.. lolz
Aloe Cortex: that will be great, pathfinder
florenze kerensky: a friend is letting hang my hat on his sim in the 1.5 hg
Sandy Adam: I don’t even know HOW to answer that LOL I go to so many grids including our behind the firewall Fashionable Grid…. guess “home” is SL
Peter Miller: Presumably you can be Home on any grid that lets you set Home?
Mimi Muircastle: I still have my land in SL too:)
Talvin Muircastle: Dianna and I are making our home here, now.
Pathfinder Lester: my region on ReactionGrid will be called “Permutation.” it’s up right now, but for now it’s just an OAR copy of Pathlandia. I’ll be editing it and making it unique over time as I have time to build.
Jokay Wollongong: yup that’s right peter 😉
Talvin Muircastle: We visit SL maybe 3 hours a week.
Pathfinder Lester: i suck at building things from scratch, so I’m going to start with what I build here on Pathlandia and change it.
Ilene Pratt: I’ve just been roaming around looking at lots of grids – I’ve got a place on Second Life thanks to the kindness of a colleague
Pathfinder Lester: i actually have a home on SL, but it’s just a small Linden Home building.
arielion dotcom: What does it signify if your name tag is gold instead of purple?
Jokay Wollongong: imprudence colour codes user names arielion
Mimetic Core: you’re special
arielion dotcom: I thought purple meant you’re “special”
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. that too arielion 😉
Mimetic Core: purple means your cool
Sandy Adam: smirks
Angelle AARISS: In SL, our presence is located on Maryport. For anyone who would like to set home there, please IM me in SL. I am Angelle Marquette. You are more than welcome to use our land for that.
Pathfinder Lester: I’m Pathfinder Lester on SL, too
Pathfinder Lester: I’m Pathfinder Lester on every grid.
Mimi Muircastle: mimi across the grids!
Angelle AARISS: Angelle everywhere
Jokay Wollongong: jokay Wollongong in all worlds too 😉
arielion dotcom: @jokay is owner of worlds. :o)
Mimetic Core: i have decided to keep my SL presence seperate from the rest of the grids
Mimetic Core: fresh start
arielion dotcom: Technically I don’t think you can use your SL name elsewhere I’ll bet they’ll sue for their last name use
Ilene Pratt: I’m Ilene Pratt everywhere so far – I get too confused to have lots of identities 😉
arielion dotcom: So I’m Arielion Clawtooth there but Arielion Dotcom here
Jokay Wollongong: LMAO.. I dare them to try me Arielion.. i Live in Wollongong 😉
Sandy Adam: 5 years from now when VWs are mass market I think I’ll be glad to use my RL name
Mimi Muircastle: so far I have used my SL name many places!
Pathfinder Lester: let’s see….is everyone set with having set your home location and relogged since you did that?
Angelle AARISS: Yes, I agree, Sandy
Pathfinder Lester: it’s time for us to start our journey. 🙂
arielion dotcom: @Jokay but you didn’t pick Wollongong from your sign in at SL did you?
Talvin Muircastle: I have been “Talvin” in Virtual Worlds since I first set foot on SocioPolitical Ramifications MUCK (aka SPR) back in the mid-90s. Muircastle is an invention of SL. 🙂
arielion dotcom: ::Holding breath for travels::
Sandy Adam: excited to try this
Angelle AARISS: Understand Talvin. Marquette also
Pathfinder Lester: ok, please open your notecard for reference

Before doing any Hypergrid jumps, be sure you have set your Home location and have relogged since you set it. If you don’t, Hypergrid jumps will not work. This appears to be a bug.
Many people find the Imprudence viewer to be very good for using with both SL and other grids. You can find it here: http://imprudenceviewer.org/
*** How to make Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.
*** Our Starting Location ***
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.233.81:9001:pathlandia
Grid Location: jokaydiaGRID (Lower)
************************
Hypergrid Jump #1
Hypergrid Address: 173.14.32.59:9000:Imagine Metaverse Core
Grid Location: MetaverseNexus (Middle)
We’ll be using one of the instant Hypergates on Pathlandia. It’s the stone archway halfway up the mountain to the North of our regular meeting circle. Just walk up to the archway and walk through it. You will automatically make a Hypergrid jump to 173.14.32.59:9000:Imagine Metaverse Core
For more information on how these instant Hypergates work, see:
https://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2010/10/29/the-metaphor-of-portals/
Hypergrid Jump #2
Hypergrid Address: mainland.newworldgrid.com:60400
Grid Location: New World Grid (Upper)
We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”
This jump will place us in the middle of 4 regions (Mount Grace NW, Mount Grace NE, Mount Grace SW, Mount Grace SE).
This area is a recreation of Mount Grace Priory, the 15th century Carthusian priory, and its immediate community surroundings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Grace_Priory
***
jokaydiaGRID has a Newbie Dome for folks to pick up freebies that can help them get started. If you find any good freebies in your Hypergrid travels that you’d like to share, you can put them in the Newbie Dome. There’s currently a lack of many good outfits and items for male avatars, so it would be great if we could find more items like that to share.
— End of Notecard —
Jokay Wollongong: I’ll hang out here till everyone makes it out..
Talvin Muircastle waves to the people headed off to explore the metaverse.
arielion dotcom: Whither thou goest I will go
Pathfinder Lester: and follow me to the gate
Pathfinder Lester: just walk thru the gate one at a time
Pathfinder Lester: i will wait for folks to go thru
Pathfinder Lester: and wait for us on the other side 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: INTO THE METAVERSE WORMHOLE
Peter Miller: 🙂
The group walks through an instant Hypergate on Pathlandia on jokaydiaGRID.
And we arrive on MetaverseNexus Grid.
Pathfinder.Lester: we are now on MetaverseNexus grid
Peter.Miller: Cool
Pathfinder.Lester: from here, we make a manual jump
Pathfinder.Lester: click the world map
Pathfinder.Lester: once it opens…
Pathfinder.Lester: In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
Pathfinder.Lester: mainland.newworldgrid.com:60400
Pathfinder.Lester: Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
Pathfinder.Lester: then Click the Teleport button.
Pathfinder.Lester: it might take a couple times to search for it
Pathfinder.Lester: so if you get “not found”…..
Pathfinder.Lester: just close the world map…..
Pathfinder.Lester: wait a moment…then try again
Peter.Miller: Got it — see you there
Pathfinder.Lester: you can’t offer hypergrid jumps like you can offer regular tps
Jokay.Wollongong: hypergrid TPs will come.. but for now the only way is via scripted gates..
Pathfinder.Lester: i’ve found that if you open your World Map as soon as you arrive on a new grid, it is sometimes not updated right away.
Jokay.Wollongong: or mapped links.. so you put the address (eg mainland.newworldgrid.com:60400) into search
Jokay.Wollongong: Yeah.. map updates are slooooooow sometimes
Pathfinder.Lester: but the notecard has the exact sequence details on how to get to our destination
Jokay.Wollongong: I’ll hang out here to watch for a sec.. is all good 😉
Pathfinder.Lester: so if someone gets lost, they could retrace their steps from it.
Pathfinder.Lester: see you all in NewWorldGrid!
The group makes a manual Hypergrid jump from MetaverseNexus Grid and arrives on NewWorldGrid.
Pathfinder.Lester: woot! made it.
Mimi.Muircastle: me too:)
Sandy.Adam: I’m guessing it’s not just Go Home to get back to where we started?
Peter.Miller: Yay Path 🙂
Mimi.Muircastle: yay Path – this is getting easier!
Pathfinder.Lester: This area is a recreation of Mount Grace Priory, the 15th century Carthusian priory, and its immediate community surroundings. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Grace_Priory
Peter.Miller: Different Home on each grid, I think
Pathfinder.Lester: let’s fly to the monastery!
arielion.dotcom: had to change my resolution again to find butons
Pathfinder.Lester: it’s to the SW of here. look for all the green dots
Pathfinder.Lester: pretty neat, eh? 🙂
Pathfinder.Lester: they are building an accurate RL recreation of it all
florenze.kerensky: yes, very nicely done but was just saying scale too small
Peter.Miller: Very impressive
Pathfinder.Lester: this is a work in progress, i believe
Mimetic.Core: it’s very nice
Mimi.Muircastle: love the designs
Pathfinder.Lester: if you open the world map, you’ll see other regions of NewWorldGrid. but you can’t jump to most of them in my experience. I think they’re closed off to hypergrid visitors.Peter Miller: Sorry, Path — where was the original priory IRL?
Pathfinder Lester: it’s in england
Pathfinder Lester: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Grace_Priory
Mimi Muircastle: it really is fun to see the differences in architechure on these sims
Pathfinder Lester: the recreation is fun to explore
Pathfinder Lester: and it looks like they are working hard to make it match RL. even all the terrain around it.
Mimetic Core: i really love to see so many people working on RL recreations across the grid
Pathfinder Lester: accurate topography
Angelle AARISS: Yes very precise.
Mimi Muircastle: I do too Core
Pathfinder Lester: Peter, I’m going to start posting the notecards on the calendar before each meeting
Pathfinder Lester: so folks know what to expect with each tour ahead of time.
Mimi Muircastle: that would be great
Pathfinder Lester: well, our meeting officially ends in 2 min. hope you folks had a good time!
Mimetic Core: indeed
Mimi Muircastle: brief, but fun!
Pathfinder Lester: i think the key thing is to remember you can go explore on your own whenever you like
Pathfinder Lester: just follow the notecards
Mimi Muircastle: thanks again Path
Pathfinder Lester: i’m going to log out. take care everyone!
That’s the end of our first tour of the day. Read on for our second meeting. We visit the same location.

Chimera Cosmos: and in SL of course 😉
Pathfinder Lester: the SLCC events are always such fun. i love them.
Chimera Cosmos: thinking you did a keynote at 08?
Chimera Cosmos: Path?
Mariis Mills: they are .. couldn’t go this year though 😦
Pathfinder Lester: I did a keynote this last one. 2010. but I’ve spoken at previous SLCCs too. I’ve been to every one.
Chimera Cosmos: ah so both 08 and 09
Chimera Cosmos: didn’t get to go to 2010 – was in China
Chimera Cosmos: tough choice 😉
Pathfinder Lester: i have a whole drawerful of SLCC t shirts from every year. lol
Chimera Cosmos: hahah
Pim Peccable: I wanted to go to the Tampa one (my home town) but $ and time were both against me
Jaeger Vollmar: Hi Pathfinder…please don’t mention SLCC…
Chimera Cosmos: Tampa was cool
Chimera Cosmos: my first
Mariis Mills: and Tampa was warm!
Chimera Cosmos: hahah
Chimera Cosmos: Phoenix was probably warmer so I didn’t mind
Jenny Oliver: 🙂 Situation is getting increasingly interesting here, isn’t it? I was so sorry to miss the opera. RL got in the way
Pathfinder Lester: Jenny, no worries. I just blogged about the excursion to the opera yesterday. they will be having additional performances in the coming weeks.
Mariis Mills: ah, ok thx 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: i think like 5 more performances
Jenny Oliver: sounds good. Thanks Pathfinder
Pathfinder Lester: Cider, you should pick up a copy of that cart you are near.
Pim Peccable: ooh good, I watned to come to the last one, but I had to anti-virus my PC
Cider Jack: ah I tried with the horse – that’s a fine beast!
Pathfinder Lester: i was thinking of you when I found it. thought you might be able to use one to haul your moonshine around
Cider Jack: lol excellent idea
Arwenna Stardust: Im glad the dresses were of use yesterday 🙂
Cider Jack: now I can put one before the other
Pathfinder Lester: Arwenna, THANK YOU for the dresses!
Arwenna Stardust: I was so sorry I couldnt make the opera 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: that was very kind of you to put some out
Arwenna Stardust: you are welcome 🙂
Jokay Wollongong: yay arwenna.. you are so good 😉
Pathfinder Lester: Arwenna, there will be more performances. I was told there will be 5 more. so you have more chances to attend in the future. 😀
Arwenna Stardust: Opera was at 5am for me 🙂
Arwenna Stardust: hehe – I thought some people might need a special gown for the opera
Pathfinder Lester: great idea, Arwenna
Chimera Cosmos: only have jeans here so far…
Pathfinder Lester: ok, I’m going to kick things off. Thank you all for joining us for the 8th meeting of the Hypergrid Adventurers Club.
Pathfinder Lester: every meeting starts with 30 min for open discussion, and 30 min for the tour.
Pathfinder Lester: to start, please just type in open chat an introduction of yourself and your interests/projects…..
Pathfinder Lester: i also post a full transcript of every meeting on my blog, and many folks read the transcripts, so this is your chance to share information about yourself and your intersts/projects with a wide audience.
Pathfinder Lester: and if you do NOT want your chat to appear in the log, please just say so in open chat and I will redact your comments.
Jaeger Vollmar: James Fullerton, teacher, 8th grade, been involved in TSL for 2 years as an owner of Sparta Island. I know rent Sparta Island here on JokaydiaGrid.
Pim Peccable: I was a mentor and builder in SL. I am interested in helping others with their project until I have time and resources for my own
Jokay Wollongong: yay Jaeger 😉
Cider Jack: I am part owner/builder of Applewood, still and forever under construction – I just am here because I like to build! I came in With Arwenna, who is the educational one of us 😉
Arwenna Stardust: I am from New Zealand – was co-leader of the SLENZ project – looking at SL education for New Zealand -. teach 2 degree courses in IT in SL atm but will be moving some to OpenSim in 2011 –
Pathfinder Lester: welcome to the jokaydiagrid neighborhood, Jaeger.
Jaeger Vollmar: thanks Pathfinder
Aaron Duffy: Aaron Duffy @ Utah State University. I’m developing Opensim-based simulations to study fern population genetics and teach middleschool science.
Chimera Cosmos: Liz Dorland – Washington U in St. Louis since 2006 – Mesa Community College in the Maricopa County CC System 20 1 yrs before that (same district CogDog came from). Have a new sim, Sagacity, on Jokaydiagrid. Interested in helping educators and faculty learn SL and OS skills.
Johnnie Waugh: Johnnie Waugh, writer, on team of Virtual Life Education New Zealand, builder in NZVWG, bon vivant and roleplayer in Second Life and Osgrid, InWolrdz, reactiongrid, Openlife, Sketchlife etc.
Pathfinder Lester: Aaron, “fern population genetics simulations in opensim” ? how does that work if I may ask?
Jenny Oliver: Using real name. Silviana Jenvieve in SL. Coordinator Space Destiny there. Director of the Midrivers Project and owner of a new island on jokaydiaGrid as of this week
Mariis Mills: Danish PhD-Candidate studying 3D-remediation of pedagogic practice in SL, have run 4 course will do 1 more before I hand in my dissrtation in the sping
Pathfinder Lester: Mariis, good luck with your diss! great to hear you are so close to finishing.
Mariis Mills: thx 🙂
Isa Goodman: Still Aaron Griffiths Director of F/Xual Education Services owner of Goodstar here still currently porting the SLENZ build to Jokaydia and eventuially to opensim in general
Chimera Cosmos: Mariis has a great blog too – http://milmariis.wordpress.com/
Peter Miller: (biologist from Liverpool)
Cider Jack: Biologist in Liverpool? There’s a joke in there somewhere, I feel sure…
Chimera Cosmos: Peter is a great science education builder and scripter
Peter Miller: Liverpudlians have an amazing sense of humo(u)r
Jaeger Vollmar: Who was the person creating ferns in-world?
Otenth.Paderborn: OK. I’m on OSgrid (well, not *now* since it’s incompatible with RG) with a sim for playing on. I’m interested in open source and multi-hosted sims as the future of virtual worlds (more like the way the internet works, say)
Aaron Duffy: The ferns are mine
Peter Miller: Sadly I wasn’t born in Liverpool
Pathfinder Lester: Otenth, i feel the same way. a network of grids, interconnected however the owners of the grids want them to be connected. i think that’s the future.
Pathfinder Lester: just like the internet and the web.
Arwenna Stardust: yes – decentralised
Otenth.Paderborn: I’m eagerly anticipating a smoother experience of such!
Jokay Wollongong: Definitely the future we see for jokaydia… the hypergrid allows us to have independence and make our own rules.. but atthe same time not become a walled garden
Jenny Oliver: Otenth that’s very interesting.
Jenny Oliver: I’m on RG and OSGrid, but mostly here and SL
Pathfinder Lester: Jokay, and jokadyagrid has grown a LOT in just the past couple months. been amazing to watch.
Jokay Wollongong: but yes we’ve about doubled our population in just over the last month
Jokay Wollongong: and tripled our sims
Chimera Cosmos: here is Peter’s blog…anyone else want me to google theirs? heheh http://tidalblog.blogspot.com/
Arwenna Stardust: wow – you have done so well to keep us all happy Jokay 🙂
Pim Peccable: Word travels fast when Pathfinder blogs 🙂
Aaron Duffy: http://fernseed.usu.edu
Jokay Wollongong: but our ninjas are on it..
Chimera Cosmos: Jokay made an impressive appearance with AJ at the VWER and made a lot of friends I think
Jokay Wollongong: Indeed.. we’re settling in our second server.. and its been a fun few days 😉

— Contents of Notecard —
Before doing any Hypergrid jumps, be sure you have set your Home location and have relogged since you set it. If you don’t, Hypergrid jumps will not work. This appears to be a bug.
Many people find the Imprudence viewer to be very good for using with both SL and other grids. You can find it here: http://imprudenceviewer.org/
*** How to make Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.
*** Our Starting Location ***
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.233.81:9001:pathlandia
Grid Location: jokaydiaGRID (Lower)
************************
Hypergrid Jump #1
Hypergrid Address: 173.14.32.59:9000:Imagine Metaverse Core
Grid Location: MetaverseNexus (Middle)
We’ll be using one of the instant Hypergates on Pathlandia. It’s the stone archway halfway up the mountain to the North of our regular meeting circle. Just walk up to the archway and walk through it. You will automatically make a Hypergrid jump to 173.14.32.59:9000:Imagine Metaverse Core
For more information on how these instant Hypergates work, see:
https://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2010/10/29/the-metaphor-of-portals/
Hypergrid Jump #2
Hypergrid Address: mainland.newworldgrid.com:60400
Grid Location: New World Grid (Upper)
We’ll make this jump the manual way (see above “How to make Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps.”
This jump will place us in the middle of 4 regions (Mount Grace NW, Mount Grace NE, Mount Grace SW, Mount Grace SE).
This area is a recreation of Mount Grace Priory, the 15th century Carthusian priory, and its immediate community surroundings.

jokaydiaGRID has a Newbie Dome for folks to pick up freebies that can help them get started. If you find any good freebies in your Hypergrid travels that you’d like to share, you can put them in the Newbie Dome. There’s currently a lack of many good outfits and items for male avatars, so it would be great if we could find more items like that to share.
— End of Notecard —
Pathfinder Lester: and remember, if anything goes wrong, you can follow the instructions in the notecard
Pathfinder Lester: and the contents of the notecards are in the blog summaries i post of each meeting
Peter Miller: Very useful resource
Pathfinder Lester: everyone, be sure you’ve set your home region before trying the jumps too.
Chimera Cosmos: can’t wait to try the instant hypergrid!
Pathfinder Lester: and that you’ve relogged since you’ve set it
Jenny Oliver: It’s quite startling at first!
Chimera Cosmos: wild
Pathfinder Lester: you only need to do that once
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. we so need to make some blam gate helmets..lolz
Pathfinder Lester: if you’ve relogged at all since you set your home location, you’ll be all set.
Pathfinder Lester: so let’s walk over to the first jump point!
Pathfinder Lester: if you have any liquids in anything larger than a 3oz container, please put it in this bin.
Pathfinder Lester: just walk thru one at a time
Pathfinder Lester: the portal will instantly hypergrid jump you
Pathfinder Lester: to the next grid.
The group walks through an instant Hypergate on Pathlandia on jokaydiaGRID.
We arrive on MetaverseNexus Grid.
Then we make a manual Hypergrid jump from MetaverseNexus Grid and arrives on NewWorldGrid.
Pathfinder Lester: made it
New World Grid: Welcome to New World Grid !
New World Grid is ‘PG RATED’. Connecting to New World implies you accept the Terms of Service. Visit this web page to read them in details: www.newworldgrid.com rules
Pathfinder Lester: we’ve jumped twice.
Pathfinder Lester: first to MetaverseNexus grid….
Peter.Miller: Have we had all the jokes about rulers yet?
Pathfinder Lester: and now we are on NewWorldGrid.
Pathfinder Lester: so the monastery is to the SW of this location
Pathfinder Lester: we can fly over there if you’d like to see it
Pathfinder Lester: just trees here 😉
Peter.Miller: high quality trees
Pathfinder Lester: they are working on an accurate RL recreation here
Mariis.Mills beautiful!
Pathfinder Lester: Mount Grace Priory, the 15th century Carthusian priory, and its immediate community surroundings.
Pathfinder Lester: based on this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Grace_Priory
Pathfinder Lester: there are other regions on the world map you’ll see, but not all of them are open to visiting Hypergrid folks like us.
Pathfinder Lester: the inside of the church is very beautiful too
Otenth.Paderborn: Wow. Accurate right down to the little pass-through windows where you won’t see the person on the other side.
Mariis.Mills: well, it’s midnight here in Denmark so I need to go to bed – but thx all for having me – I’ll be back for more fun and bumpy jumping :-))
Pathfinder Lester: and i think they’re recreating all the topography of the surrounding forests very accurately
Pim.Peccable: Thanks for coming Mariis
Pathfinder Lester: andn ow you know how to get back here, from the notecard 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: well, that’s the tour. 🙂
Eraldo Carlucci: Thanks Pathfinder great as always
Johnnie.Waugh: thanks path…… by the way that is a great crane over there
Pathfinder Lester: i know it’s not a lot of time to explore locations, but we can all come back here and explore more.
Otenth.Paderborn: Thank you Path! I’m so glad the stars (and electrons) finally aligned to let me join you.
Pathfinder Lester: all kinds of little details in this recreation that are really quite beautiful.
Jenny.Oliver: Indeed, Pathfinder!
Pim.Peccable: lots of details
Pim.Peccable: I half expected to find eucharist in the sanctuary
Pathfinder Lester: have a good evening, everyone. hope to see you all again soon!
And so ends another series of tours of the Hypergrid Adventurers Club!

Just seen your account of the visit to Mount Grace. I’m the builder. Here’s some feedback.
a) your piccies show a snowy landscape. Strange: its green grass on my build!
b) someone remarks on it not being built to scale. Indeed, it IS *grin*. The default SL avatar size, used on all of OSG, is actually about 2.5 to 2.75 metres tall! I’ve calibrated all the scaling of buildings to the scale of the landscape. Some of the site plans I used, donated by the UK heritage collection are 1:5 and 1:500 scale, so I have that right.
c) If your visitors start at the Visitor Centre, at Mount Grace NE 26,44,297, and click on the info placards, they’ll read about this and, if they wish, can rescale their avatars to suit the build. They could also experiment with altering the camera position, or work in Mouselook.
d) They can also pick up a freebie monk’s habit there; and learn how to click on the Info Milestones down at ground level, to build up a dossier of notecards and pictures describing life in a 15th century community.
e) Finally, if anyone would like it, please e-mail me and I’ll send you a Powerpoint show of how the site is being built, from terrain file construction at the start, to sculptie-based horse-poos at the end!
Christi Maeterlinck
Thanks for all that great info, Christi! I’m so glad you found the blog post about our visit to your build. We loved it. Thank you for making it open to hypergrid visitors to explore!
I’ll email you right now to get a copy of your powerpoint presentation. Can’t wait to read it.
Pathfinder, I was going through my old Mount Grace file and came across your kind reply to my post. Did I ever send you the powerpoint presentation details? Just in case I didn’t, here they are. The documents are too large to attach, so I’ve put them up on Google Docs: just click on each of these to download. (Ignore the comment about them not having been virus-checked; I did that myself on upload. ‘Download Regardless’ is the button to press!
