Hypergrid Adventurers Club meet #5: Exploring collaborative art and history education on ReactionGrid

Today we took a Hypergrid jump from jokaydiaGRID to ReactionGrid.

We visited PESD Island, a place where teens learn about history and art. It’s a great example of how to cultivate collaborative learning.

Read on for a full transcript and photos of our journey!

For more information about the Hypergrid Adventurers Club and how you can join us, please see our homepage.  You can also follow our club’s tweets at #HGAC.

As usual, the first half of the meeting was spent introducing ourselves to each other and discussing everyone’s various interests and virtual world projects.  The second half of the meeting featured a live tour of the Hypergrid.  Read on for a full transcript, pics, and to see how teens are working collaboratively on ReactionGrid to learn about serious historical events as well as just have fun.

We begin on the region Pathlandia, located on jokaydiaGRID.

Jokay Wollongong: loove the horse pathfinder.. lolz
Pathfinder Lester: it’s neat, isn’t it?
Pathfinder Lester: she keeps walking in circles
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: we’ll officially start the meeting in a few min.
Pathfinder Lester: everyone have a good halloween? eat all the candy already?
Tinsel.Silvera: yes and yes
Tinsel.Silvera: lol
Jokay Wollongong: hehehe
Mimetic Core: my teeth hurt
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: i found a really funny graph about halloween candy. lemme see if I can put it up here.
Pathfinder Lester: there it is behind me

Mimetic Core: haha
Pathfinder Lester: i think it is pretty accurate, given my own personal experience
Tinsel.Silvera: rofl
Tinsel.Silvera: good one
Tinsel.Silvera: and so true
Jokay Wollongong: hehehe
Mimetic Core: you hand out the stuff you don’t really care about and hope for a light turnout
Helen Landmesser: Have a candy bar in front of me right now.
Jokay Wollongong: lolz.. /cry .. this house is completely empty of chocolate.. its not fair! 😉
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, all the stuff like “bit-o-honey” gets handed out first. man, I can’t stand those bit-o-honey things.
Jokay Wollongong: lolz
Mimetic Core: lol
Mimetic Core: hater
Jokay Wollongong: pfft honey when you can have real, teeth rotting sugar!
Jokay Wollongong: lolz
Pathfinder Lester: they don’t even taste like honey! what the heck is that all about?
Mimetic Core: cousins of candy corn
Pathfinder Lester: and don’t get me started on “Circus Peanuts”
Pathfinder Lester shudders
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. or carob (pretend) chocolate.. what is with that! 😉
Pathfinder Lester: it’s some kind of consipiracy
Jokay Wollongong: hehehe
Pathfinder Lester: has to be.
Jokay Wollongong: agreed
Pathfinder Lester: ok, i’m going to kick things off. thank you all for coming today….
Pathfinder Lester: this is the 5th meeting of the Hypergrid Adventurers Club!
Mimetic Core: woot
Jokay Wollongong: hooray 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: woot
Pathfinder Lester: for those of you who attended and read my blog summary of the 2 meetings on Sunday, it was pretty amazing….
Pathfinder Lester: we went to FrancoGrid and attended a live rock show there. met lots of folks on FrancoGrid, too.
Jokay Wollongong: some great images too!
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, they have scripted some amazing light show stuff
Helen Landmesser: Looked great
Tinsel.Silvera: it looked like everyone had lots of fun
Pathfinder Lester: I’ve been speaking with the folks who organized the concert, and they’re going to let me know when more shows like that will be happening…
Jokay Wollongong: awesome
Pathfinder Lester: and I’ll tweet about the upcoming shows on #hgac as I learn more, so you all can have a heads-up about it.
Pathfinder Lester: and one more thing about FrancoGrid….
Pathfinder Lester: there’s a live mixed-reality Opera happening this Saturday, Nov 6
Jokay Wollongong: Ooo yes! the opera sounds like its going to be aaamazing
Mimetic Core: yes. looking forward to that
Jokay Wollongong: *what am i going to wear.. omg!*.. lolz
Pathfinder Lester: I’m going to tweet on #hgac to remind folks about the Opera. I think it will be really amazing.
Pathfinder Lester: and speaking of communication, I’m working on setting up a mailing list for the HGAC.
Tinsel.Silvera: cool
Mimetic Core: nice
Pathfinder Lester: that will allow us to talk to each other easily between meetings, and to help folks network with each other.
Pathfinder Lester: I’ll blog and tweet about the mailing list in the next week, so stay tuned about that.
Orchid Jameson: k
Mimetic Core creates another mail filter… 😉
Pathfinder Lester: and as usual, I will be posting a full transcript and report of this meeting on my blog. so don’t worry if you just came in late. everything will be recorded.
Pathfinder Lester: which also means, if you do NOT wish for your chat to be included in the log I post, please just say so in open chat and I’ll redact your comments.
Mimetic Core: the candy discussion was intense
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Orchid Jameson: ooh sorry i missed that
Pathfinder Lester: yeah, that will go in the transcript for sure
Pathfinder Lester: including the image I posted behind me
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Jokay Wollongong: gotta be a full record! 😉
Jokay Wollongong: hehe
Pathfinder Lester: so as usual, the first 30 min of this meeting will be open discussion and introductions. 2nd 30 min will be a live tour of a place on the hypergrid….
Orchid Jameson: I’ve a queston that may be addressed elsewhere that I missed…
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, go ahead. ask away.
Orchid Jameson: I have established myself as “Orchid” on various grids, sl,
Orchid Jameson: I’m curious if there are any issues with hypergridding with the same name between grids that I’ve registered on (and have separate inventories already)
Pathfinder Lester: good question!
Pathfinder Lester: the answer is, it doesn’t matter. each identity is unique, even if a “visiting” av has the same name as someone already registered on that particular grid.
Tinsel.Silvera: I am guessing that our inventories are tied to our uuid’s on each grid?
Jokay Wollongong: It shouldnt be a problem orchid.. when you hypergrid.. your inventory and your identity is still be managed by your home grid (ie the grid you are logged in to)..
Pathfinder Lester: Tinsel, yes, you got it. 🙂
Jokay Wollongong: So you can actually go meet up with yourself 😉
Jokay Wollongong: tis quite bizaare
Pathfinder Lester: Jokay, yes, i’ve done that. lol
Orchid Jameson: OK… so if I have nice stuff in one place I should start there (looking at torn jeans)
Mimetic Core: may cause a paradox though
Pathfinder Lester: i have a pic hanging up in my lodge here on Pathlandia of me meeting me.

Here’s the picture hanging on the wall of my lodge.  In this photo, I am logged in using two accounts, Pathfinder Lester (home grid jokaydiaGRID) and Pathfinder Lester (home grid ReactionGrid).

SarVana Cherry: cool…
Tinsel.Silvera: i wonder about that if I HG from reaction grid to osgrid where i own a parcel
Tinsel.Silvera: my parcel there doesn’t recognize my avi from RG
Jokay Wollongong: hehe.. me too pathfinder.. thinks we should have an exhibition of them!
Pathfinder Lester: Doppelganger Portraits!
Tinsel.Silvera: lol
Tinsel.Silvera: I have a question
Jokay Wollongong: Hehe… might be a fun competition to get us started over on mentor lab 😉
Jokay Wollongong: sure tinsel?
Pathfinder Lester: and when you visit other grids, your name over your head will indicate where your account “lives”…after the “@” sign.
Orchid Jameson: ah good
Tinsel.Silvera: I hg’d over to Jokay’s grid last night
Pathfinder Lester: Tinsel, what’s your question?
Jokay Wollongong: indeed.. i love seeing ‘@jokaydia’ on people i accidently meet out hypergridding.. too cool 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: when I HG’s back to Reaction Grid my visual still showed her sims surrounding me where some RG sims shoudl have been
SarVana Cherry: As much as I hate too… I have to leave; have a RL meeting. Will read log. So excited about being here forgot mtg. lol, lol
Pathfinder Lester: Tinsel, i’ve seen that happen someitmes
Jokay Wollongong: Ah yes.. the maps sometimes take a little while to update..
Jokay Wollongong: so you sort of see the ghost of sims past
Pathfinder Lester: SarVana, no worries. take care, and nice to meet you!
Tinsel.Silvera: I could pull up the map and all looked as it was supposed to in RG
Jokay Wollongong: Seeya oon SarVana.. safe journey 😉
Jokay Wollongong: soon!
Tinsel.Silvera: but when I tried to teleport I ended up back at Jokay’s landing spot
SarVana Cherry: Ditto… went out yesterday… so much fun. thanks to Jokay
Jokay Wollongong: Hrm.. we do have a mapped link between RG and jokaydiaGRID..
Jokay Wollongong: to make it easier for people to pop between our two spaces..
Jokay Wollongong: we have a single sim there too
Tinsel.Silvera: There seemed to be some residual that remained with me.
Jokay Wollongong: Sooo.. im guessing.. maybe you clicked the mapped sim..
Jokay Wollongong: and that’s how you popped back over here
Helen Landmesser: I could not figure out how to get from RG to here earlier.
Tinsel.Silvera: Which direction?
Jokay Wollongong: If you want to try out the mapped link..
Jokay Wollongong: go to Scooter Sim..
Jokay Wollongong: and you’ll see jokaydia.metaverseworlds.com:9010 mapped to the west
Jokay Wollongong: that is actually our RG sim 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: I have found that yes
Orchid Jameson: whispers… this is my first meeting… is there a notecard I can grab to catch up.. ?
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, yep, i’m going to hand out the notecard right now 🙂
Jokay Wollongong: and over at reationgrid.. we have a mapped sim to the west
Helen Landmesser: Orchid, my first mtg too.

Before doing any Hypergrid jumps, be sure you have set your Home location and have relogged since you set it.  If you don’t, Hypergrid jumps will not work.  This appears to be a bug.
Many people find the Imprudence viewer to be very good for using with both SL and other grids.  You can find it here: http://imprudenceviewer.org/
*** How to make Hypergrid Jumps in 4 easy steps ***
1) Open your World Map.
2) In the text box next to the Search button, enter the Hypergrid Address.
3) Click the Search button and wait for the map to move to the jump region.
4) Click the Teleport button.

*** Our Starting Location ***
Hypergrid Address: 66.240.233.81:9001:pathlandia
Grid Location: jokaydiaGRID (Lower)
************************

Hypergrid Jump #1
Hypergrid Address: jokaydia.metaverseworlds.com:9010
Grid Location:  ReactionGrid (Lower)

We will make this  jump in a new way!  We’ll be using one of the instant Hypergates on Pathlandia.  It’s the stone archway next to the big tree across the water to the West from our meeting circle.  Just walk up to the archway and walk through it.  You will automatically make a Hypergrid jump to jokaydia.metaverseworlds.com:9010.

For more information on how these instant Hypergates work, see: https://becunningandfulloftricks.com/2010/10/29/the-metaphor-of-portals/

Once we arrive on ReactionGrid, we’re going to take a local teleport to the region “PESD.”
PESD island is the home of Norma Underwood (RL: Noreen Strehlow).  For 4 years, Norma  was the technology integration specialist for the Phoenix Elementary School District #1 in Arizona.  Today she is an art teacher in the district, and she works with teens on PESD island on collaborative art and historic recreation projects.

Today we’ll be exploring PESD island and projects such as a recreation of the Lincoln Memorial, a Holocaust Memorial, and many student-created art projects.

http://twitter.com/noreenstrehlow

*** jokaydiaGRID has a Newbie Dome for folks to pick up freebies that can help them get started.  If you find any good freebies in your Hypergrid travels that you’d like to share, you can put them in the Newbie Dome.   There’s currently a lack of many good outfits and items for male avatars, so it would be great if we could find more items like that to share.
— End of Notecard —

Tinsel.Silvera: It was kinda cool / kinda strange when I got back to my home sim and everything back of me was RG and all the sims front of my (visually) were yours
Jokay Wollongong: I’ll draw a picture and post it on the blog and we can share with Hypergridders..
Pathfinder Lester: also, please everyone type in open chat a little introduction of yourself and your projects/interests. that helps folks get to know each other and network.
Tinsel.Silvera: I was like half and half
Jokay Wollongong: tis def a bit confusing 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: Tinsel Silvera – Help Island – Reaction Grid
Pathfinder Lester: lots of folks read the transcripts on my blog too, so this is a chance for you to share info about yourself with an even wider audience than just us sitting here. 🙂
Mimetic Core: there are still some oddities with the HG setup. i will have mixed results on my own grid.
Jokay Wollongong: The map updating is an annoying one for sure..
Orchid Jameson: Orchid Jameson the playful avie hasn’t worked on projects virtually… Is know to some in SL as AnnaMina Alter (shhhush)
Tinsel.Silvera: I figured that was what it was tied to – map updating
Jokay Wollongong: it does eventually right itself.. but if you need a clean map… reeelog 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: I was moving faster that the map was
Jokay Wollongong: yup Tinsel.. you’re just too speedy 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: lol
Orchid Jameson: RL in a research university in Buffalo NY area
Helen Landmesser: Working at SimHub in Greenville, SC. New tech project of University Center, encouraging faculty and students to use virtual worlds for teaching and learning. Will also be helping develop OpenSim grid for Clemson and virtual world consortium.
Pathfinder Lester: Helen, what’s the virtual world consortium?
Helen Landmesser: Group of universities using virtual worlds, sharing resources. Was Carolinas virtual world cons. but now changed name to VWC. Clemson, App state, George mason, NC virtual schools and others
Pathfinder Lester: cool!
Pathfinder Lester: is there a website where we could learn more about it?
Jokay Wollongong: indeed.. very cool
Pathfinder Lester: collaborative efforts like that between schools are a great idea. share resources, experiences, and knowledge.
Jokay Wollongong: absolutely… league of worlds sounds pretty interesting too.. and nzgrid / vlenz
Jokay Wollongong: great to see!
Pathfinder Lester: that’s one of the real strengths of educators exploring virtual worlds. they like to work together. 🙂
Jokay Wollongong: agreed 😉
Tinsel.Silvera: yes
Pathfinder Lester: League of Worlds is very neat. I got to meet Owen Kelly for lunch when I visited Finland a few weeks ago.
Pathfinder Lesterhttp://www.leagueofworlds.com/
Helen Landmesser
: http://www.cvwconline.org/ Getting them to work together is the difficult part
Orchid Jameson: herding cats
Pathfinder Lester: Helen, ty for the link.
Pathfinder Lester: so, let’s see.. anyone have any general questions, please just shout ’em out.
Helen Landmesser: Not the best web site right now. Getting ready to update it. Steve Bronack is a good contact: bronack@clemson.edu
Pathfinder Lester: thanks for the contact info
Pathfinder Lester: will be great to watch that org grow.
Pathfinder Lester: Helen, so do you do many presentations to faculty to introduce them to the idea of virtual worlds for learning?
Helen Landmesser: Yes and we offered mini grants this summer to get several started. Using SL and Teleplace currently.
Pathfinder Lester: oh wow, you offer grants? that’s great!
Orchid Jameson: you have a supportive administration Helen
Orchid Jameson: may I ask the source of your funding for grants?
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, yes, that’s no easy task to accomplish!
Orchid Jameson: There are several of us here at the University at Buffalo who have tentatively begun things… but administratively the keys to the land keep getting passed around
Orchid Jameson: So projects flounder in transition
Pathfinder Lester: What do you mean exactly by them holding the keys to the land?
Orchid Jameson: who is administratively responsible for the sims and what is done with them…
Pathfinder Lester: ahhh, gotcha
Orchid Jameson: and what else is on that person’s plate
Pathfinder Lester: we were just going around introducing ourselves and our projects/interests. Metta, please jump right in. 🙂
Metta Lane: Thank you and excuse me for beihn late, tried logging in with the port 9000 instead of 8002 🙂
Pathfinder Lester: no worries, metta
Pathfinder Lester: what brings you here?
Metta Lane: I’m Maria iRL and I met Pathfinder in Turku a couple of weeks ago at a conference
Helen Landmesser: Director of the University Center, Fred Baus, sees the value of exploring new avenues. The Univ. Center has seven universities, Clemson, USC Upstate, Furman, Lander, SC State, MUSC. Members pay fee per student using space, part of SimHub start up funding. If there is not something in it for them, faculty will not try new things.
Pathfinder Lester: Metta, oooooh!
Metta Lane: I work at Åbo Akademi university
Pathfinder Lester: that was a great conference 🙂
Metta Lane: Yes, it was! Thank you for being there!
Helen Landmesser: Welcome, Metta. Planning to visit Turkey next summer.
Pathfinder Lester: my pleasure. it was fun to demo Opensim-on-a-USB-key too. i had never done that before.
Metta Lane: Kim and I are going to try to put up an opensim at the uni
Pathfinder Lester: Turku, Finland 😉
Helen Landmesser: Oops
Pathfinder Lester: lol
Pathfinder Lester: i had never been to Turku before. beautiful town.
Metta Lane: It went sooo smoothly when PF did it! 🙂
Helen Landmesser: Please also check out simhub.org for info on what we are doing.
Pathfinder Lester: the ability to literally carry around in your pocket an entire virtual world is pretty amazing
Orchid Jameson: ty Helen
Orchid Jameson: I really want to try that Pathfinder…
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, that’s one way you can get around the problem of admins holding the keys to something. carry your own world around!
Orchid Jameson: good point
Jokay Wollongong: Roger Stack has made a great recipe for setting it up..
Jokay Wollongong: and is trialing it with students… so they can do exactly that
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, i blogged about how to set up Opensim on a USB key. following Roger’s recipie. it’s really easy.
Orchid Jameson: yes i saw your blog
florenze kerensky: and it was easy hehe
Pathfinder Lester: the point of my blog post was to show how easy it is to set it up by following Roger’s recipie. anyone can do it, really.
Orchid Jameson: I am only on Mac/ OS 10.x
Tinsel.Silvera: it is easy to setup
Tinsel.Silvera: I have not been able to get OS setup on my mac
Tinsel.Silvera: keep running into issues
Orchid Jameson: nods
Jokay Wollongong: oh Tinsel.
Jokay Wollongong: talk to the lovely Chimera Cosmos..
Pathfinder Lester: Tinsel, I found a blog post about how to set things up on a Mac. i’ll see if I can find it.
Tinsel.Silvera: noted
Jokay Wollongong: she’s been working on that and will have some leads im sure
florenze kerensky: i am a clinical chemist in rl and a virtual vagabond since 2000
Tinsel.Silvera: k
Orchid Jameson: that would be great Pathfinder..
Tinsel.Silvera: which grid is CC’s homeworld Jokay?
Jokay Wollongong: She’s here and also in SL
Jokay Wollongong: and in RG too im pretty sure..
Helen Landmesser: Florenze, you’ve been doing this a while.
Pathfinder Lester: i’ll dig for it later. will add the link when I post the transcript of this meeting later.
( here’s the link I found on how to get Opensim running on Mac OS: http://tgib.co.uk/2010/07/15/the-road-to-open-simulator-part-ii/ )
Jokay Wollongong: Chim is everywhere.. hehe
Tinsel.Silvera: k
Tinsel.Silvera: lol
Tinsel.Silvera: yes please do PF
Metta Lane: aaargh… I am so sorry, now I am being called for (still at work) so I need to go, I try to join you asap
Tinsel.Silvera: I want to get OS setup on my Mac
Pathfinder Lester: no worries Metta
Metta Lane: bye for now
Jokay Wollongong: Take care Metta.. thank for coming 😉
Pathfinder Lester: ok, this brings us to the “tour” portion of our club meetings
Pathfinder Lester: please open the notecard I handed out
Pathfinder Lester: today, we’re just going to make 1 jump.
Orchid Jameson: may i set home here?
Pathfinder Lester: i wanted to make sure folks have time to explore our destination, which is PESD island on ReactionGrid
Pathfinder Lester: Orchid, sure thing
Jokay Wollongong: ooo yes.. lotsa great stuff over there to check out 😉
Pathfinder Lester: you’ll have to relog after you set it to make sure it sticks
Pathfinder Lester: PESD island is the home of Norma Underwood (RL: Noreen Strehlow). For 4 years, Norma was the technology integration specialist for the Phoenix Elementary School District #1 in Arizona. Today she is an art teacher in the district, and she works with teens on PESD island on collaborative art and historic recreation projects.
Pathfinder Lester: and to get there, we will just take one of the instant Hypergates here on Pathlandia.
Pathfinder Lester: we’ll wait for Orchid to get back, then we can head on over.
Jokay Wollongong: I’ll hang out here to help anyone who needs a hand too.. just yell 😉
Helen Landmesser: lead the way..
Pathfinder Lester: okie doke!
Pathfinder Lester: please follow me.
Pathfinder Lester: walk through this gateway
Pathfinder Lester: and you’ll end up on jokaydia island on ReactionGrid
Pathfinder Lester: just be sure you haven’t eaten in the past hour.
Pathfinder Lester: might get hypergrid jump cramps

The group walks through an instant Hypergate on the region Pathlandia to make a Hypergrid jump from jokaydiaGRID to ReactionGrid.

And here we are arriving on the region jokaydia on ReactionGrid.

Pathfinder.Lester: woot!
Pathfinder.Lester: hypergrid jump successful
Pathfinder.Lester: there we go
Pathfinder.Lester: there are different ways to make hypergrid jumps
Pathfinder.Lester: i really like the instant Hypergates. makes it easy and immersive.
Orchid.Jameson: is this similar to what folks on sl call Star Gates around sl?
Pathfinder.Lester: Orchid, somewhat. except the gate I set up only brings you to one location
Helen.Landmesser: So is there a gate here that goes back to Joykadia?
Orchid.Jameson: yikes
Pathfinder.Lester: and with hypergrid jump gates, you move to an entirely different grid
Pathfinder.Lester: not just a teleport to another region
Orchid.Jameson: nods
Pathfinder.Lester: you’ll notice that your inventory and av are still with you here
Pathfinder.Lester: now, from here, just open the World Map and make a regular teleport to the region “PESD”
Pathfinder.Lester: i’ll see you all on PESD

The group makes a local teleport to the region PESD.

Helen.Landmesser: Awesome, we’re on the color wheel.
Pathfinder.Lester: this island is full of art projects and historic projects
Pathfinder.Lester: Norma Underwood runs it, and she works with teens here.
Pathfinder.Lester: let’s go outside. there are a couple specific places id like to point out.

Orchid.Jameson: great use of virtual world
Pathfinder.Lester: yes!
Pathfinder.Lester: this is the beginning of a holocaust memorial that the kids are building
Orchid.Jameson: heh… back in the day I trained as an art teacher…
Orchid.Jameson: pre laptops
Pathfinder.Lester: they are learning about the history of it and also working to build this memorial
Pathfinder.Lester: they wanted to make a small area where people can leave things as part of the memorial
Pathfinder.Lester: i left that flower in a vase there
Pathfinder.Lester: so if you have anything you’d like to add, please feel free to leave it now or sometime later when you visit again.
Orchid.Jameson: looks in library for small stone…
Pathfinder.Lester: the focus on much of the work here is on collaborative creation
Orchid.Jameson: appropriate to leave on Jewish memorial..
Pathfinder.Lester: the kids really love that aspect of virtual worlds. working as groups together on things inworld.
Pathfinder.Lester: now, the second collaborative building project is up above us
Orchid.Jameson: Does anyone have a pebble in inventory they could pass me?
Pathfinder.Lester looks
florenze.kerensky: they did it nicely. i’ve been in rl and recognized it immediately
Pathfinder.Lester: oh boy, that’s not a pebble. i found a BOULDER
Pathfinder.Lester: lol
Jokay.Wollongong: hehe
Mel.Blauvelt: hahaha
Pathfinder.Lester: you can resize it, though
Orchid.Jameson: lol its ok Pathfinder… I’ll find my way back..
Pathfinder.Lester: if anyone wants a copy, you should be able to take a copy
Pathfinder.Lester: i think i found that boulder on FrancoGrid
Orchid.Jameson: nice textures
Mimetic.Core: i can’t wait to see our inventories as we collect all the flotsam from dofferent grids…
Pathfinder.Lester: i create different folders for the things I find on other grids
Pathfinder.Lester: each grid has it’s own folder in my inventory
Pathfinder.Lester: helps me remember where I found things 🙂
Mimetic.Core: good idea
Helen.Landmesser: good idea
Pathfinder.Lester: i was just chatting with kim holmberg in skype. he’s from finland and trying to find us. 🙂
Orchid.Jameson: ok.. slow learner day… as we jump around how can we tell what grid we’re on?
Pathfinder.Lester: good question Orchid
Jokay.Wollongong: i can go collect 😉
Pathfinder.Lester: thanks jokay
Pathfinder.Lester: Orchid, I do not know how to tell where I currently *am* in terms of which grid
Mel.Blauvelt: help->about imprudence will always mention what grid/version you’re on
Orchid.Jameson: hrm
Pathfinder.Lester: i just know that based on the jumps I make
Pathfinder.Lester: oh it does!
Pathfinder.Lester: i learned something new!!!!
florenze.kerensky: hmmm, i go to help then about and it shows grid
florenze.kerensky: i am assuming that shows grid i am on
Mimetic.Core: it’s also in the upper left hand part of the viewer window
Pathfinder.Lester: different viewers must show it differently
Pathfinder.Lester: i’m using imprudence right now
Orchid.Jameson: I used help about grid and got a 404 error
Orchid.Jameson: in Imprudence
Helen.Landmesser: Thanks for the how-to
Tinsel Silvera: Help > About shows the grid for Hippo viewer as well
Helen.Landmesser: So something is up above us?
Pathfinder.Lester: in Imprudence, Help>About alaso seems to show where your “home” grid is. where your account and inventory lives.
Pathfinder.Lester: helen, yes!
florenze.kerensky: You are at 258441.4, 255023.8, 23.4 in PESD located at (66.240.205.25:9001)
OpenSim 0.6.9 (ReactionGrid)
Orchid.Jameson: duh help > about Imprudence.. sorry guys.. need coffee
Pathfinder.Lester: let’s fly up and visit the Minion Challenge 🙂

Pathfinder.Lester: hmm..i can’t seem to get into the parcel ;P
Pathfinder.Lester: but you can see what it’s all about
Pathfinder.Lester: she must have access restricted or something
Pathfinder.Lester: but here, the kids build their own Minion from the movie
Pathfinder.Lester: and then they put pics of themselves in little cubes over their creation
Pathfinder.Lester: i think there was a big invisiprim blocking us
Tinsel Silvera: yes there is
Pathfinder.Lester: so I am tping you folks in now
Helen.Landmesser: thanks
Tinsel Silvera: ty PF
Pathfinder.Lester: there we go. we’re all inside now
Orchid.Jameson: ty
Tinsel Silvera: time for foosball?
Pathfinder.Lester: lol
Pathfinder.Lester: i think this is a great example of how to make a collaborative lesson that kids will have fun doing.
Pathfinder.Lester: kids love Minions. 😉
Pathfinder.Lester: there are other neat places to explore here
Pathfinder.Lester: but our time is officially up
Tinsel Silvera: k
Pathfinder.Lester: i know folks have meetings and such, so I always try to keep things on time
Helen.Landmesser: That went by fast
Pathfinder.Lester: you should be able to get back here though
Pathfinder.Lester: Helen, i know! it’s always like that.
Pathfinder.Lester: lol
Orchid.Jameson: left breadcrumbs
Tinsel Silvera: thank you for the tour
Mimetic.Core: thanks pathfinder
Pathfinder.Lester: i have links in the notecard where you can learn more about PESD and get in touch with Norma on twitter if you wish
Helen.Landmesser: Thanks for tour. Nice to meet everyone.
Mimetic.Core: nice to meet you
Orchid.Jameson: This is a great group…
Pathfinder.Lester: yes, always great to see new folks joining us!
Orchid.Jameson: Exploring with others is fun
Pathfinder.Lester: i have some time beforeI need to leave, so I’m happy to hang out and chat for a few min more.
Tinsel Silvera: agreed Orchid
Pathfinder.Lester: oho,Kim Holmberg just arrived
Mimetic.Core: i love the fact that the students are identifying their RL selves with their projects
Orchid.Jameson: Pathfinder is this time one of the regular times set for the Explorers group?
Pathfinder.Lester: Orchid, yes
Pathfinder.Lester: i have it currently set in the calendar as a recurring meet ever Wed
Orchid.Jameson: Are there any inworld Explorer groups…. or is that what your offline email group will be?
Pathfinder.Lester: groups don’t work right now
Orchid.Jameson: ah
Pathfinder.Lester: so that’s what I’ll be using the email list for
Orchid.Jameson: k
Orchid.Jameson: and the twitter stream
Kim.Holmberg: Hello all
Pathfinder.Lester: yes, and the #hgac hashtag on twitter
Pathfinder.Lester: hi Kim! so great you could make it 🙂
Mel.Blauvelt: hi Kim
Pathfinder.Lester: Kim, here’s the notecard I handed out earlier
Pathfinder.Lester: has info about this island and the teen edu projects going on here
Kim.Holmberg: ok, great
Pathfinder.Lester: the woman who runs this place used to have a presence on the TeenGrid in SL
Pathfinder.Lester: but since that has gone away, she is here now.
Pathfinder.Lester: This Minion Challenge area is one project where kids work together to build their own Minions (from the movie Despicable Me)
Kim.Holmberg: cool
Pathfinder.Lester: clever way to engage kids with media that they already are familiar with
Pathfinder.Lester: so that’s the tour. woot! any questions?

Thanks for the transcripts – and the LoW nod. Note, we’re planning (a) additional in-world get-togethers in the coming weeks, and (b) a f2f meeting in Greenville, SC sometime late Spring 2011 … stay tuned … hope to see all you HAC’ers then. 🙂
